When Is Ganga Dussehra 2025, 5th Or 6th June? Know Date, Snan Daan Muhurat And Puja Rituals
Ganga Dussehra, also known as Gangavataran, commemorates the descent of the sacred River Ganga from the heavens to the earth. This auspicious day holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus, symbolizing purification, redemption, and the benevolence of the divine.
In 2025, Ganga Dussehra will be observed on Thursday, June 5, aligning with the Dashami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha.

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath undertook rigorous penance to bring the celestial River Ganga down to earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors and grant them salvation. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva agreed to receive Ganga in his matted locks to mitigate her powerful descent, releasing her gently onto the earth. This divine event is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra, symbolizing the cleansing of sins and the flow of divine grace.

Significance Of Ganga Dussehra
Ganga Dussehra is believed to absolve devotees of ten types of sins-three physical, four verbal, and three mental. Bathing in the Ganges on this day is considered highly auspicious, offering spiritual purification and liberation.
The festival underscores the sanctity of rivers in Hinduism and promotes environmental consciousness by venerating water bodies as life-sustaining and divine.
Puja Rituals Of Ganga Dussehra
- Holy Dip (Snan): Devotees take a ritualistic bath in the Ganges during the Brahma Muhurat (pre-dawn hours), seeking purification and the washing away of sins. For those unable to visit the river, sprinkling Ganga water at home is considered beneficial.
- Puja and Aarti: Offerings of flowers, lamps (diyas), and incense are made to the river, accompanied by the chanting of hymns and mantras. Evening aartis are performed with grandeur at riverbanks, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere.
- Charity (Daan): Acts of charity, such as donating food, clothes, and money to the needy, are integral to the observance, embodying the spirit of giving and compassion.
- Fasting: Some devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it after performing the evening rituals, as a form of penance and devotion.
Celebrations
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with fervor in various parts of India, especially in regions through which the Ganges flows. Major celebrations occur in cities like Varanasi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Prayagraj, where thousands gather at ghats to participate in collective rituals, aartis, and cultural programs. The festival fosters a sense of community and spiritual unity among participants.
By participating in the rituals and honoring the sacred river, devotees reaffirm their connection to the divine and commit to a path of righteousness and compassion.
