According to mythology, a pious king named Ashwapati used to rule in Madradesh. The king did not have any children. He performed a special yagya for the birth of a child. Due to this after some time a girl was born in the king's house. King Ashvapati named her Savitri. When the king asked Savitri to find a husband for herself when she became eligible for marriage, Savitri accepted Dyumtsen's son Satyavan as her husband. When Narad came to know that Satyavan Savitri was going to get married, Narad told King Ashwapati that Satyavan was short-lived. He will die after only a few years. After listening to Narad ji, the king explained to his daughter Savitri but Savitri remained adamant that she would marry only Satyavan.

The king lost in front of Savitri's determination and got Savitri and Satyavan married. Savitri remained engaged in the service of her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and her husband. Savitri went to the forest with her husband Satyavan on the day that Narad ji had declared to be Satyavan's last day. As soon as Satyavan went to the forest and started climbing trees, he started having unbearable pain in his head due to which he fell asleep in Savitri's lap. After some time, Yamraj along with his messengers started towards the south with the soul of Satyavan.

Along with him, Savitri also started following him. Yamraj looks at him and says, O husband, you have supported your husband as far as a stranger can support, but now you should return. Savitri said that I should go as far as my husband will go, this is the eternal truth.

Yamraj, after listening to Savitri's pious words, asked her to ask for a boon, then Savitri asked Yamraj for a boon that he should give sight to his in-laws and father-in-law who are blind, then Yamraj immediately said Amen. Now Yamraj asked them to return but Savitri still started following him. Then Yamraj asked him to ask for another boon, so he asked Yamraj to get back his father-in-law's lost kingdom.

Yamraj again said ok. After this Yamraj again asked Savitri to go back but still Savitri remained adamant. Seeing this determination, Yamraj's heart melted and he asked Savitri to ask for another boon. Then Savitri told Yamraj that she wanted to become the mother of Satyavan's children, and that please grant her a boon.

Seeing Savitri's devotion to her husband, Yamraj became very happy and returned Satyavan's life, and with this Yamraj disappeared. Savitri came under the same banyan tree and life started flowing in Satyavan's body again and he sat up. With the blessings of Yamraj, the eyes of his parents regained their sight, and their lost kingdom was also recovered.
