Sawan 2025 Date: 10 Or 11 July? Check Shravan Somwaar Dates And Fasting Rules Here!
With calendars across India listing different dates for the start of the holy month of Sawan 2025, devotees are understandably confused. Is Sawan beginning on 10th July or 11th July?
The answer depends on where you live and which calendar system you follow.

In North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Delhi, Sawan begins on Thursday, 10 July 2025.
However, in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, where the Amavasyant calendar is followed, Sawan will start from 26 July 2025, and the Mondays (Somwars) of Shravan will be calculated accordingly.
So if you're living in North India, mark 10 July as the start of Sawan. If you're in the South or West, follow your regional panchang.
Why Sawan Is So Important For Shiva Devotees
The month of Sawan (Shravan) is entirely dedicated to Lord Shiva, whose powerful cosmic dance and energy are believed to be strongest during this time. It's said that even a single offering or prayer made during Sawan reaches Shiva a hundredfold faster.
Sawan Somwar Vrats (Monday fasts) are particularly powerful. Devotees observe strict fasting, perform abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Shivling with water, milk, honey, and bel patra, and chant powerful mantras like "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.

Sawan Vrat Rules Everyone Should Follow
Once Sawan begins, devotees are expected to observe certain rules to purify their body and mind. Here's what most traditions agree on:
- Eat Satvik Food: Onion, garlic, meat, and alcohol are strictly avoided. Many devotees eat only one meal a day after sunset.
- Avoid Salt on Mondays: For stricter vrat, many choose to go completely saltless every Monday.
- Wake Up Before Sunrise: Take a bath before Brahma Muhurat and begin your puja with fresh flowers and offerings.
- Stay Clean and Calm: No harsh speech, arguments, or lies. Sawan is about inner silence as much as outer rituals.
- Wear Rudraksha: Wearing a Rudraksha mala, especially one energized during Sawan, is believed to protect and bless the wearer.
Things You Shouldn't Do During Sawan Month
Many believe that missteps during this holy period invite unnecessary challenges. Avoid these:
- No Haircut or Shaving: It's believed to disturb spiritual vibrations.
- Don't Pluck Tulsi or Bel Leaves After Sunset: These plants are sacred and should only be touched during daylight.
- Avoid Iron and Leather Items in Puja: Use copper or silver utensils for rituals wherever possible.
- No Intoxicants or Late-Night Parties: Sawan is a time of withdrawal and devotion, not indulgence.
Sawan Somwar Dates In North India (2025)
Here are the Sawan Somwar vrat dates as per the North Indian calendar:
- First Somwar - 14 July 2025
- Second Somwar - 21 July 2025
- Third Somwar - 28 July 2025
- Fourth Somwar - 4 August 2025
- Fifth Somwar - 11 August 2025
If you're following the Southern calendar, the Somwar fasts will begin from 28 July onward.
Powerful Rituals You Can Add This Sawan
This year, try deepening your Sawan experience with these additions:
- Water a Shivalinga daily (even if it's a small one at home) before leaving for work.
- Recite Shiva's 108 names or the Lingashtakam each Monday.
- Offer blue hibiscus or white lotus flowers, which are considered rare and dear to Shiva.
Let the pouring monsoon skies remind you to wash away inner negativity. Whether you fast all Mondays or simply offer water to the Shivling with intention-Lord Shiva sees devotion, not perfection.
So mark your calendars, prep your puja thali, and welcome Sawan with a heart full of love and surrender.
