Sawan or Shravan is one of the holiest months in Hinduism and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva as it is considered to be his favourite month. This year, it started on 4 July 2023 and will continue till 31 August 2023. The consort of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati is also worshipped during this month.

Devotees worship Bholenath with utmost devotion and with a true heart during this holy month then their wishes will be fulfilled and all their troubles will go away instantly.

This month is considered very auspicious for people who are married. Unmarried men and women also keep fast so that they can get their desired life partner. Sawan is the time when Lord Shiva leaves Kailasha and comes to visit the Earth. This is also the month when Devshayani Ekadashi is observed and Lord Vishnu goes into Yog Nidra for the next four months during this time as Lord Shiva takes care of the creation.

Why Cutting Hair Is Prohibited In Sawan

We all have heard that cutting hair is prohibited in Sawan, but not everyone is aware of the reason behind it. It is important to understand that any belief begins according to the prevailing circumstances. In ancient times, the tools used for shaving and cutting hair were made of iron and their edges used to be very sharp. Therefore, the chances of getting cut and injured used to increase tenfold.

In the month of Sawan, there is more rain and less sunlight. Therefore, there was a high possibility of infection in the wound. This is the reason why cutting hair and shaving is prohibited in the month of Sawan to prevent cuts, and injuries.

Why Nail cutting Is Prohibited In Sawan

Nail cutting is also prohibited in the month of Sawan. Not only this, but body massages using oil are also prohibited in this month. There is a belief that oil massages in this month can create planetary defects in a person's life and they will not get the benefits of Sawan Puja. Also, people are advised to refrain from any kind of indulgence in non veg items, addictive substance and engaging in vindictive activities.

What To Do During Sawan Month

One is supposed to clean their body and mind during this month and spend maximum time to worship Lord Shiva. One needs to respect the elders of their family and also offer water to the Shivlinga to please the Lord and get desired blessings.
