Pitru Paksha 2023: You Should Not Eat These Foods During Shradh, Else It Will Make Your Ancestors Angry
Pitru Paksha, a significant 16-day period in the Hindu calendar is observed by families to pay homage to their deceased ancestors.
Commonly known as Shradh Paksha, it lasts from the full moon of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month. This year Pitru Paksha is starting on Friday, 29 September 2023 and it will continue till Saturday, 14 October 2023.
Food plays an integral role in these rituals, with certain foods prepared and avoided while remembering and honoring the ancestors. Let us know about foods that you should not consume during this time.

1. Onion and Garlic
These pungent vegetables are generally avoided during Pitru Paksha as they are believed to be tamsic and rajasic. They are believed to generate heat in the body and disturb the peaceful state of ancestor's souls.
2. Non-vegetarian Food
Many Hindus abstain from consuming non-vegetarian foods, including meat, fish, and eggs, during Pitru Paksha as a sign of purity and respect for the deceased.
3. Alcohol and Tobacco
Consumption of alcohol and tobacco is discouraged as it is considered impure during this period and it is said to cause addiction. Therefore, while honoring ancestors, one needs to stay away from it.
4. Black Salt
This or the excessive use of salt is avoided during Pitru Paksha as it is said to cause thirst to the departed souls. Apart from this, black mustard and jeera should be avoided as well.
5. Leftover Food
Consuming or offering leftover or stale food is discouraged, as it is considered disrespectful if you serve it to your deceased ancestor during this period.
6. Wheat And Pulses
Eating raw grains is a strict no-no during Pitru Paksha shradh. Therefore, you must abstain from consuming rice, pulses (masoor dal), or any split lentils (Chane Sattu and Black Urad Dal) and wheat in their raw form. It is considered forbidden to consume these food items if they are not cooked.
7. Raw Vegetables
Consuming raw root vegetables like potatoes, arbi, and radish are also forbidden during this period and it is likely to make the deceased ancestors angry. Also, cucumbers and brinjals should be avoided at all costs.
