Pitru Paksha 2023: Why Is Celibacy (Brahmacharya) Practiced During Mahalaya Paksha? Reasons And Benefits
Celibacy, which is known as "Brahmacharya" in Hindi, holds immense significance in the Hindu religion. It is a practice of abstinence from any physical or sexual activity and there are various religious reasons for it.
Pitru Paksha will begin on 29 September and continue till 14 October 2023. It is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to honoring and paying respects to one's deceased ancestors or departed souls. There are numerous rituals that are practiced during this time and one of them is observing celibacy or Brahmacharya during this period. Let us know about this in detail.

Pitru Paksha 2023: Why Is Celibacy (Brahmacharya) Practiced During Mahalaya Paksha? Reasons And Benefits
Celibacy in Hinduism is crucial in one's journey of life because it is said to bring spiritual discipline, help one to preserve energy, purify mind, detachment from the material world, and teach self-control, and renunciation. Read on to know more about the benefits.
1. Spiritual Discipline
Celibacy is seen as a form of self-discipline, particularly in controlling one's desires and impulses. By abstaining from sexual activity and other sensual pleasures, individuals can develop greater control over their minds and bodies, which is essential for spiritual growth.
2. Preservation of Energy
Celibacy is believed to be vital in conserving energy, which is known as "Ojas" or "Virya." This conserved energy is said to be redirected towards spiritual practices and pursuits, which enhances one's spiritual progress.
3. Purity of Mind
Celibacy is associated with purifying the mind and connecting with the self on a deeper level. This mental purity aids in meditation and the pursuit of higher knowledge. When a person refrains from engaging in sexual activity, it is believed to help keep the mind clear, focused, and free from distractions.
4. Detachment From Materialistic Pleasures
By abstaining from worldly pleasures, one can detach oneself from material desires and attachments, which is a crucial step towards achieving spiritual liberation (moksha). This is said to free the soul from the cycle of birth and death (samsara).
During Pitru Paksha, observing celibacy by a person who is performing shradh is a way to respect the departed souls of ancestors and seek blessings from them when they come to visit their descendants in the earthly realm during this period. This act is also seen as a way to show devotion and gratitude to these souls. Also, not observing celibacy in Pitru Pasha is said to create Pitru Dosha and make ancestors very angry.
Apart from this, all auspicious events like engagement, marriage, housewarming ceremonies, naming ceremonies of the child, etc. are prohibited during this time.
