Pitru Paksha 2023: Pitru Paksha is also known as Mahalaya Paksha and it is a 16-day period to honor and show gratitude to the deceased ancestors by their family members. It falls during Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month in the Hindu Calendar.
This year Pitru Paksha Shraddha has begun from 29 September and will continue till 14 October 2023. Rituals like Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed during this time while remembering the ancestors or forefathers. Also, food is offered to them and family members engage in charitable acts in their name.

In Hinduism, deceased ancestors are considered equivalent to Gods and their presence affects the family members. It is said that if the souls of the ancestors are happy, then family members witness progress, peace, and success in their lives; if the ancestors become angry, then the family members bear the consequence of Pitru Dosh, and obstacles come in their path. Therefore, observing Pitru Paksha is extremely essential.
Shaving hair, beard, or cutting nails during Pitru Paksha has always been prohibited. There is a story behind this practice, which will help you to understand this ritual better.
Bhishma once mentioned Pitru Paksha in the Anusandhan Parva of Mahabharata, which is an Indian epic. To please the ancestors, it is advised to perform Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. It is also said that Pitru Paksha is a time of mourning and for the peace and salvation of the souls of our ancestors, one should adopt a simple lifestyle and engage in charitable activities.
Since ancient times, cutting hair, shaving, or getting nails done come under grooming and enhancing one's appearance. As Pitru Paksha is a time of mourning, it is not appropriate to wear makeup or engage in any such acts during this time. The ancestors do not like it and it makes them very angry and brings bad omen and problems in one's life. However, there are no stringent rules regarding this and everything depends on one's faith whether they want to practice this or refrain from this.
Apart from this, eating Tamasic food is also avoided during this time so that the ancestors do not feel disrespectedand therefore, family members refrain from addictive substances, and non-veg food items in the absence of their forefathers during Pitru Paksha.
Also, auspicious works such as housewarming, marriage, buying something new, or any religious and cultural events are not organized during this time.
