Paush Putrada Ekadashi 2025: Why The Final Ekadashi Of The Year Holds Deeper Significance
Observed in the Hindu month of Paush in 2025, Paush Putrada Ekadashi is closely linked with prayers for family well-being, continuity, and emotional stability. For many households, it marks the final Ekadashi of the year, a day that carries both spiritual and personal meaning. If you are planning to observe the vrat or simply want to understand why this day is significant, here is everything you need to know about this Ekadashi.
Paush Putrada Ekadashi 2025: Date And Tithi
In 2025, the Ekadashi tithi spans two calendar days.
- Ekadashi Tithi begins: Tuesday, 30 December 2025, around 7:50 AM
- Ekadashi Tithi ends: Wednesday, 31 December 2025, around 5:00 AM
Because the tithi overlaps two days, the fasting date depends on the tradition you follow:
- Smarta followers generally observe Paush Putrada Ekadashi on 30 December 2025
- Vaishnava followers may observe it on 31 December 2025
Both observances are considered correct when followed according to the respective tradition.
Parana Time: When To Break The Fast
Breaking the fast at the right time is as important as observing it.
- If you observe the vrat on 30 December, parana should be done on 31 December 2025, during the afternoon Dwadashi window.
- If you observe the vrat on 31 December, parana should be done on 1 January 2026, during the morning Dwadashi period.
Always ensure the fast is broken after Ekadashi ends and within Dwadashi tithi.
The Traditional Katha Of Paush Putrada Ekadashi
The widely accepted katha of Paush Putrada Ekadashi centres around King Suketuman and Queen Shaibya, a virtuous royal couple who were deeply distressed by the absence of an heir. Concerned about the future of their lineage and kingdom, they sought spiritual guidance and were advised by sages to observe Paush Putrada Ekadashi with complete devotion to Lord Vishnu. The couple followed the vrat with discipline, prayer, and restraint, after which they were blessed with a son. This story forms the core reason the Ekadashi is associated with progeny, family continuity, and stability.
Why Paush Putrada Ekadashi Is Observed
The word Putrada translates to "giver of progeny." Traditionally, this Ekadashi is associated with prayers for children, family harmony, and emotional fulfilment. Couples pray for healthy offspring, while families observe it for stability, peace, and continuity across generations.
Beyond this, Paush Putrada Ekadashi is also about closing the year with purpose, seeking clarity, forgiveness, and steadiness before stepping into a new phase.
How The Vrat Is Observed
The vrat is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the focus remains on simplicity and discipline.
Common practices include:
- Waking up early and taking a ritual bath
- Cleaning the prayer space and offering flowers, fruits, incense, and a diya to Lord Vishnu
- Observing a nirjala fast (water-only) or a phalahar fast (fruits and milk), depending on health and capacity
- Avoiding grains and beans, as is customary on Ekadashi
- Spending time in prayer, Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, or mantra chanting
- The day is meant to be calm, reflective, and grounded rather than ritual-heavy.
Charity And Simple Acts Of Giving
Donation holds special value on Ekadashi. Many devotees choose to give:
- Food, grains, or fruits
- Clothes or essentials
- Meals to those in need
These acts are seen as extensions of devotion rather than obligations.
Mantras Commonly Chanted
While there is no fixed rule, devotees often chant:
- Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
- Vishnu Sahasranama
- Putrada Ekadashi-specific prayers seeking family well-being and clarity
- Consistency and sincerity matter more than the number of chants.
Paush Putrada Ekadashi 2025 is all about slowing down at the end of the year, turning inward, and focusing on what truly sustains a family - health, understanding, and continuity. Whether you observe it as a full vrat or through silent prayer, the day offers a meaningful moment before the year changes, allowing you to step forward with steadiness and purpose.
