Navratri 2023: Why You Should Not Eat Garlic And Onion During Navratri
Navratri 2023: The 9 auspicious days, Navratri is about to begin and it is all about Goddess Durga or Shakti. Devotees worship the deity, keep fast and prepare bhog on these days to please her and get the choicest of blessings.
This year Navratri will start from 15 October 2023 and continue till 23 October 2023. Also, it will coincide with Vijayadashami on 24 October 2023.

Devotees observe fast and eat fruits because they are considered Satvik food. The most important thing is that garlic and onion should not be consumed on these days. Also, do you know that according to spiritual scriptures, garlic and onion are related to Rahu and Ketu? Let us know about this in detail.
Story Behind Garlic, Onion And Rahu Ketu
According to a Hindu religious scripture, at the time of Samudra Manthan, there were gods on one side and demons on the other side. Both of them were churning the ocean together. During this time the nectar pot came out. One who drinks this nectar becomes immortal. Vishnu thought that it would be very bad if the demons drank the Amrit (divine immortal nectar). Therefore, taking the form of Mohini, she started giving nectar to all the gods and did not give it to the demons.
But one demon or asura understood this matter and he cleverly stood in the line of the gods. As soon as he consumed the divine nectar, Lord Vishnu came to know about it and immediately cut it into two pieces with Sudarshan chakra. While the head of the asura was known as Rahu, his body was known as Ketu. It is believed to be immortal and still creates problems in the horoscope of people.
But, while cutting the asura, two drops of blood fell on the earth. These two drops of blood grew in the form of garlic and onion. Therefore, consuming these increases tamsic desires in humans and disturbs their clean energy. One also sees too many nightmares. Concentration decreases and the person starts becoming violent. Therefore, garlic and onion are prohibited during the Navratri fast and are not used in any bhog.
