Hartalika Teej 2023: Date, History, Significance And Celebration
Hartalika Teej is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by married women in India. It falls on the Tritiya tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu calendar. This auspicious occasion holds immense importance for married women as they fast and pray for marital bliss and happiness.
On this day, Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati are worshipped by married women for unbroken good fortune. In 2023, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on 18 August 2023. Let us know the fasting rituals, history, significance, and celebration associated with this auspicious festival.

Fasting Rituals
On this day, women observe a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise, abstaining from food and water throughout the day. The fasting ritual signifies their dedication towards Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, seeking blessings for a harmonious married life. The fast is broken only after sighting the moon at night and offering arghya to it.
Also, Waterless or Nirjala fasting is observed by some women on Hartalika Teej. It involves complete abstinence from both food and water during the entire day. This intense form of fasting showcases their devotion and determination while enduring physical challenges for divine blessings.
Significance
Fasting is considered an important aspect of Hartalika Teej and it is an act of purification that helps individuals cleanse their body, mind, and soul. On this auspicious day, observing vrat or fast not only strengthens one's willpower but also allows one to focus deeply on prayers and meditation, fostering spiritual growth and connection with the divine.
Legend, Stories
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati desired Lord Shiva as her husband. To fulfill her wish, she embarked on a rigorous penance in the forest, seeking blessings from sages. Her friend Hartalika helped her escape an unwanted marriage arranged by her father. Hence, married women fast on this day to honor their friendship and seek marital bliss.
Celebrations
Apart from fasting, women adorn themselves in traditional attire and jewelry. They gather together to sing devotional songs praising Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's divine union. Colorful processions take place where women carry idols of deities while dancing joyfully through the streets.
