Lord Shiva in turn asked Lord Brahma to fill a Kumbha (pot) with amrita (nectar) and the source energy for creating the world and to place it at the top of mount Meru. He blessed Lord Brahma to start his activity of creating the world from the place where he'd found the pot after a great flood.

Lord Brahma found the Kumbha in the place named Kumbakonam on a Magha star day in the Tamil month of Masi.

As per the scriptures, Lord Shiva blessed the Masi Magha day as one of the best days to get the blessings of Himself and Goddess Parvati, his consort.
