Kanakadhara Stotram To Chant On Akshaya Tritiya

By Subodini Menon

Kanakadhara Stotram is a hymn dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. The word 'Kanakadhara' is an amalgamation of the two Sanskrit words' Kanakam' and 'Dhara'. 'Kanaka' here means gold or wealth and the word 'Dhara' can be translated as the one who holds. It praises Goddess Lakshmi as the one who holds wealth or gold in her hands.

Goddess Lakshmi is one of the prime gods who are worshipped on Akshaya Tritiya. The others are Lord Maha Vishnu, Lord Kubera and Lord Ganesha. Goddess Lakshmi bestows wealth, prosperity and happiness on the one who prays to her with a mind free of prejudice and other unholy thoughts. Worshipping her on Akshaya Tritiya is all the more auspicious.

Kanakadhara Stotram is an excellent hymn to chant on Akshaya Tritiya. It was written By Guru Adi Shankaracharya and there is an interesting story behind the creation of the Stotram.

It is said that Guru Adi Shankaracharya was out to beg for alms. He reached a hut that belonged to a poor woman. The woman was aghast that such a pious saint had come to her door and she had nothing to offer him. She ransacked the whole kitchen and could only find an old gooseberry.

She was ashamed to offer it to Guru Adi Shankaracharya but did not want to sand him away empty handed. So, she offered him the old and shrunken gooseberry. Guru Adi Shankaraharya was touched by her pure intent and action. He was also saddened by the poor state of the good woman. He broke into a song that praised Goddess Maha Lakshmi. At the end of the song, the Goddess appeared and asked Guru Adi Shankarachara to ask for a boon.

He replied that he didn't require anything for himself but he wished that this poor woman be blessed with riches. Goddess Maha Lakshmi replies that she had not done a single good deed in her past life and she had not earned enough punya.

This was the reason that she was in poverty. Guru Adi Shankaracharya argued that this woman is a pious lady in this life and gave away the only thing she owned with utter devotion. He said that that single deed was enough to wash away all the bad deeds and sins of her past life.
