Kala Bhairava Ashtakam To Chant On Bhairav Ashtami

By Subodini Menon

Kala Bhairava is a fierce form of Lord Shiva. It is said that Kala Bhairava was born out of Lord Shiva's anger. The name 'Kala Bhairava' has two meanings, both of which define the character of the terrifying deity. One meaning suggests that the word 'Kala' refers to the black- or dark-coloured appearance of Lord Kala Bhairava.

As per another description, the word 'Kala' means time. Lord Kala Bhairava is considered to be the lord of time and its passage.

Bhairav Ashtami, Kalashtami or Kala Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha during every month of the Lunar Calendar. It is believed that it was on this day that Lord Kala Bhairava appeared from Lord Shiva as a result of the anger and sorrow in him. On this day, the devotees of Lord Kala Bhairava keep a fast in his honour and visit temples that are dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava and Lord Shiva.

This month, Kala Ashtami falls on 31 October. So, to honour the occasion, we present to you the Kala Bhairava Ashtakam. This stotra is chanted by the priests of Banaras while blessing the devotees who visit the temple of Lord Kala Bhairava. Chant this Stotra to be free from all dangers and fears.
