Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the new moon of the Vaishakh month, according to Hindu calendar.

Meaning Of Akshaya
The word 'Akshaya' in Sanskrit means never diminishing. Hence, the day of Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring success and good luck which never diminishes.

According to the Hindu mythology, Akshaya Tritiya is the day when the Treta Yug began and the sacred Ganges descended on Earth from heaven. It is also the day when Annapoorna Devi was born. Scriptures state that knowledge gained or charity done on Akshaya Tritiya is extremely fruitful. The entire day of Akshaya Tritiya is considered auspicious and so there is no need to look for the right moment or muhurtam to start any new work on this day.
Purchasing Gold On Akshaya Tritiya
It is considered lucky to purchase gold or silver or any other metal on Akshaya Tritiya. It is said that if one purchases gold or other metals on this day, the quantity keeps increasing. In other words, wealth and prosperity never leaves the house if the purchase of gold is made on Akshaya Tritiya.
Hence, there is frenzy to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya which makes the gold and other metal prices go soaring up on this particular day. People prefer to buy ornaments in bulk to ensure good luck and prosperity.
Jain Belief
Akshaya Tritiya is also an important day for the Jains. According to the Jain legends, people from Ayodhya brought gold and diamond jewellery to offer to their Tirthankara Rishabhadev, who was the king of Ayodhya centuries ago.
Thus, we find Akshaya Tritiya to be a day when people purchase goods with the intention of bringing home wealth and prosperity which will multiply over time.
