It is here in goddess parvati, kailasanathar temple, kumbakonam temples, lord shiva, navagraha temple, navagrahasthalam, priya devi r,thingalur that Lord Chandra venerated the feet of Lord Shiva to absolve himself of a curse. 'Thingal' in Tamil would mean 'the Moon', hence the name goddess parvati, kailasanathar temple, kumbakonam temples, lord shiva, navagraha temple, navagrahasthalam, priya devi r,thingalur.

The moon plays a vital role in one's natal horoscope. The placement of moon in one's horoscope determines the mind of the person, mother's welfare etc. The moon's wrong positioning in one's horoscope reflects the murk in one's mind. Hence the malefic planetary effects of an ill positioned moon is nullified by offering worship to Lord Shiva, who is hailed as Kailasanathar and Mother Parvati who is worshipped as Periyanayakki along with Chandra Bhagavan in goddess parvati, kailasanathar temple, kumbakonam temples, lord shiva, navagraha temple, navagrahasthalam, priya devi r,thingalur

The Legend

As per the legend, owing to the radiant beauty of Lord Chandra, King Daksha Prajapati gave all his 27 daughters in marriage to him. However Lord Chandra's affection lay only with one of them, Rohini, there by neglecting the rest. Hence he was cursed by Daksha Prajapati of a waning and waxing disease. The aghast moon, sought refuge in the ever resplendent Lord Shiva who absolved him of the curse in goddess parvati, kailasanathar temple, kumbakonam temples, lord shiva, navagraha temple, navagrahasthalam, priya devi r,thingalur. The moon was blessed to attain its fullness in splendour and shape after waxing and waning for fifteen days. Lord Shiva also ordered Chandra Bhagavan to relieve people of their suffering owing to adverse effects of a wrongly positioned moon in one's horoscope.

Another incident from the Hindu mythology also refers to Lord Chandra being saved by the Grace of Lord Shiva. When Lord Vishnu distributed the divine elixir amongst the devas, an asura on the persuasion of Sukracharya, in the guise of a deva also partook of it. Lord Chandra reported this to Lord Vishnu who severed the head of the asura with the Sudharshana chakra. The head joined with the body of man to become Rahu Bhagavan and the trunk had a head of a snake attached to it becoming Ketu Bhagavan. Rahu and Ketu were behind Chandra and started devouring it. Chandra prayed to Lord Shiva who bestowed him with the power to attain fullness in shape in fifteen days. This story also accounts for the waxing and waning of the moon.

Yet another story in association with the temple history holds great significance. Apputhi Adigal one of the sixty four Saivite Nayanmars was greatly devoted to Thirunaavukkarasar, yet another Nayanmar(Devotee of Lord Shiva). Once while about to host a meal for Thirunaavukkarasar at his home, Apputhi Adigal's son who was bitten by a snake. Apputhi Adigal and his wife without the knowledge of Thirunaavukkarasar, rolled the child's body in a mat and placed it outside.

Thirunavukkarasar by the grace of Lord Shiva came to know of the death of the boy. He at once took the body to the temple of Kailasanathar and sang songs beseeching the Lord to bring the boy back to life. No doubt, the child breathed afresh and woke up as if from a deep sleep. The tens songs collectively came to be widely known as 'Thirupadhigam' which is still sung to this day to invoke the blessings of Lord. Hence it is believed when these songs are sung with true devotion, it makes any poison powerless.
