This day commemorates the mischievous deeds of Lord Krishna (who is the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu) during his childhood. The term Dahi Handi comes from two terms 'Dahi' which means curd and 'handi' which means earthen pot that is used to keep and process milk products.
This festival is primarily celebrated in Maharashtra (where it is known as Gopalakala) and northern parts of India during the month of August and September. In 2023, Dahi Handi will be celebrated on Thursday, 7 September 2023. The Ashtami tithi will begin at 03:37 pm on 6 September 2023 and Ashtami tithi will end at 04:14 pm on 7 September 2023.
