Char Dham Yatra 2023: Why Blowing Conch Is Not Allowed In The Temple Of Badrinath?
Badrinath is one of the Char Dham Complex of temples, and the only one to be situated in the Himalayas. It is situated at an altitude of 3300 metres with an extreme cold weather to match. Being one of the 108 divya deshams of Vaishnavaites, it is visited by millions only to cleanse away their sins at the feet of the all-merciful Lord Badrinath.

Many consider it their obligation to visit this temple at least once in their lifetime. Located in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, it opens every year from the end of April to the start of November except monsoon. Surprisingly blowing of the conch is banned in this temple, considering that it is a temple of Vishnu whose main accessory is conch. Certain scientific reasons can also be ascribed to this belief. Let us see what they are.
From The Spiritual Point Of View
Blowing of the conch has a lot of spiritual connotations to it. The very sound of the conch chases away the negative spirits and all the negativities in human beings. Once the conch is blown, it gives you the complete benefits of the puja done. By blowing conch, diseases are cured and mind becomes calm. It is a major part of any worship ritual in a temple and hence the absence of a conch in a Vishnu temple has to be properly justified
From The Scientific Point Of View
But as per experts, since Badrinath is covered with ice almost always, the conch echoes have an effect on the ice and can break them. This in turn is dangerous to anybody present in the area. If the conch is blown in a certain frequency, it can also upset the ecology of that place. Ice storms can also occur due to the blowing of the conch. These will lead to degradation of the land and strip the soil of its elements the result of which can be long lasting. Although Vishnu has a conch in his hand always, it is not possible for us to blow the conch as a part of the worship procedure.
As Per The Legends
When Goddess Lakshmi in her incarnation as Tulsi, was meditating on char dham, Lord Vishnu killed her husband Shankha Chood. In order to erase this memory out of her, the blowing of Conch or Shankha was banned from Badrinath puja procedures. According to another legend, Agastya was on a demon killing spree but two demons Vatapi and Ilavala vanished out of sight. Vatapi took his resort in Mandakini river whereas Ilvala chose the conch to save himself out of the danger. It is believed that if the conch is blown, Demon Ilvala would emerge out of the conch. It is for these two reasons that conch blowing in Badrinath Dham is not at all recommended.
