Assam state is spread across an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq miles). The state is enveloped by Bhutan and the state of Arunachal Pradesh on the Northern side; Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur on the eastern side; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Bangladesh towards the south; and West Bengal at the western side.

Assam was, in the earlier times, referred to as Kamrup in the Ancient Indian literature. Pragjyotishpur was another name given to it due to the extensive astrological practices that Assam was a part of during ancient times. Assam is unique for its own reasons. The reasons are enlisted here.

8. Who has not heard of Assam tea? Assam supplies more than 50% of tea and naturally the largest tea producer in the world.
9. A good 50% of India's oil and petroleum production comes from Assam.
10. Oldest ampitheatre in Asia by name Rang Ghar in Sivasagar is found in Assam, Asia's oldest operational refinery is found in Digboi Assam.
11. Ever wondered where Kaziranga National park, is situated? Make a trip to Assam to see it. It is famous for the Indian one horned Rhinos. It was declared as a tiger reserve in 2006. It is the world heritage site.
12. Kamakhya Temple for whom Sati Devi is the governing goddess in Assam, is a Shakti peeth and a famous pilgrimage center.
13. World's largest river island, Majuli, located on the Brahmaputra river in Assam, India. It is also the first island district in Asssam.
14. World's smallest river island is located over Umananda near Brahmaputra which is home to endangered species of golden langurs
15. Assam has its own hub for black magic, Mayong, a popular name which every tantric in the country is aware of. It is a very old and authentic center for witchcrafts.
16. Assam has a mysterious valley called Jatinga where birds arrive in flocks during winter to commit suicide for reasons unknown.
17. Assam takes the credit for having the oldest paramilitary forces called Assam Rifles that originated in Assam,.
18. It is known for Bhoot Jolokia, the hottest chilli ever found, and orchids that are found in plenty here.
