Throwback Thursday: How A Monsoon Shoot Sparked Virat And Anushka’s Forever Bond
In the soft drizzle of a 2013 Mumbai monsoon, something magical happened-cricket's golden boy met Bollywood's power girl, and a love story began.
It wasn't a movie set or a cricket stadium. It was a shampoo commercial shoot-an unlikely setting for India's most iconic modern couple to meet. But as raindrops tapped on the makeup vans and umbrellas dotted the film set, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma found something extraordinary in the ordinary. 'MONSOON MOHABBATEIN' continues with real stories, real romance, and a season made for love.
The Unexpected First Meeting
The duo was cast together for a Clear Shampoo TV ad shoot. Anushka, already a rising star, was coming off films like Band Baaja Baaraat and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Virat, the star Indian batsman, was building a name beyond the field.
It was July 2013-peak Mumbai monsoon-and the commercial was being shot indoors due to weather delays. Both had long waiting hours between takes. That's when the ice broke.
In an old interview, Virat admitted, "I was nervous. I cracked a joke immediately something silly-and she laughed. That's how we started talking." That first laugh in the middle of Mumbai rain became the first ripple of a storm that would last forever.
Rainy Days And Private Dinners
While neither of them confirmed the relationship immediately, their appearances became frequent. They were spotted at rainy-day dinners in Mumbai's posh Bandra area, sharing umbrellas, or leaving in the same car.
Anushka was private. Virat was cautious. But love, especially during monsoon, rarely hides well in Mumbai. Their chemistry was unmistakable. Unlike other Bollywood-cricketer romances, this one was rooted in friendship, shared ambition, and deep admiration for each other's work.
The Stadium Kiss That Melted A Nation
By 2014, Virat scored a half-century against Sri Lanka and blew a kiss to Anushka sitting in the stands. It was still raining lightly that day in Kolkata. That moment was iconic not just because a cricketer was acknowledging his love, but because a generation saw love that was open, proud, and fearless.
The Breakup That Coincided With A Heavy Monsoon
In 2016, the couple briefly broke up. Gossip columns speculated everything-from career pressure to family objections. Interestingly, the split occurred around June-July, again coinciding with India's rainy season. Social media mourned. Memes trended. But behind the scenes, the two were healing.
In August 2016, they were spotted having dinner again on a rainy night in Mumbai. People whispered, "They're back."
Rekindled In The Rain, Reborn In Italy
Soon after, their relationship stabilized-calmer, quieter. They traveled more, often to locations known for monsoon charm: Bhutan, Dehradun, London.
In 2017, in the month of December (Italian winter rains), they tied the knot at a heritage villa in Tuscany. Anushka's bridal entry to "Din Shagna Da" in a flower-strewn mandap under a cloudy sky became a moment etched in modern love history.
Why They're Couple Goals
1. Public, Yet Private: They share glimpses of love but never overexpose.
2. Mutual Respect: He often calls her his "anchor." She praises his discipline.
3. Through Highs & Lows: Be it trolling, injuries, flops, or World Cup failures-they stood together.
4. Shared Simplicity: Despite being icons, they enjoy rainy walks, local cafés, and spiritual retreats.
In one interview, Anushka said, "We're very different people, but we bring out calmness in each other."
And Then Came Vamika
In January 2021, the couple welcomed their daughter, Vamika. Since then, their love story has evolved-less in headlines, more in meaningful glimpses. Virat often shares monsoon selfies of Anushka sipping chai on balconies, or photos of Vamika playing on rain-kissed lawns. Their story continues in small joys, shared umbrellas, and endless cups of chai.
In a world of flings and fast fame, Virat and Anushka's love story stands tall like a banyan in rain-steady, strong, and nourishing. It started with a drizzle on a shampoo set, and now drips into every aspect of their life-from pitch to parenting. Their love is monsoon. Unexpected. Beautiful. And worth every storm.
