Nirmala Sitharaman, India's Finance Minister, presented the fiscal year 2024-25 budget on July 23, 2024, which marks her seventh budget presentation.
She is an Indian politician who also serves as Minister of Corporate Affairs of India. As a Rajya Sabha MP since 2014, Sitharaman has previously served as the Defence Minister of India, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs (Ministry of Finance), and Minister for Commerce and Industry.

Early Life, Education And Career
Born on August 18, 1959, in Madurai to parents Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman, she hails from a Tamil Iyar Brahmin family. Her father used to work for Indian Railways. While her father hailed from Musiri, Tiruchirappalli, her mother's family had their roots in Thiruvenkadu, and in the Thanjavur and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu.
Nirmala Sitharaman completed her schooling from Madras and Tiruchirappalli. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirapalli. In 1984, she moved to Delhi to complete her Master of Arts and M.Phil in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Before venturing into politics, Nirmala Sitharaman had an extensive career abroad. She worked as a salesperson and later as an assistant to an economist in the UK. Her professional journey also included stints at PricewaterhouseCoopers and the BBC World Service.

Nirmala Sitharaman's Love Story
It was during her studies at JNU that she met her husband Dr Parkal Prabhakar. He was an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the London School of Economics. Both of them fell in love during that time despite having different political stances. While Sitharaman believed in BJP ideologies, Prabhakar leaned towards Congress. He also served as a communications advisor to the then Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu. The couple later got married in 1986 and have a daughter named Parakala Vangmayi.
Political Career And Achievements
Nirmala Sitharaman joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2006 and became its national spokesperson by 2010. In 2014, she was appointed as a Junior Minister in Narendra Modi's cabinet and was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh. Later, she secured the Karnataka seat in the Rajya Sabha elections.
In 2017, she made history by becoming India's second female Defence Minister. By 2019, she had taken on the role of Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, making her India's first full-time female Finance Minister. She presented her first budget in July 2019 and has since delivered four more budgets.
Her contributions have not gone unnoticed; she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from JNU and was ranked as the 34th most powerful woman globally by Forbes Magazine in 2019.
Nirmala Sitharaman's tenure has been marked by significant achievements. She played a crucial role in providing relief packages during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her efforts have solidified her reputation as one of India's most influential women.
