Does Extra Marital Affair Deserve Death Penalty?
This article is written just three days after the brutal murder of Rinku Sachdeva (28) and suicide of Amit Budhiraj (32) at the Silicon Valley of India. The techie murdered his wife on a suspicion that she was having an extra marital affair with her colleague. He then committed suicide; thus bringing their three-year live in relationship and one year old marriage to a tragic end.
The incident somehow reminded me of Shakespeare's Othello. The situation and incidents may be different here. Amit had even collected solid evidences of his wife's infidelity. However his friends reveal that he never confronted Rinku on her extra marital affair. Moreover their marriage counselor also gave the proof that their marriage was on the verge of break up. This proves that the universal feeling of jealousy and vengeance prompted Amit to do the brutal act. At this time as any other Bangalorean of the present generation, I would tend to ask the question "Does Extra Marital Affair Deserve Death Penalty?"
The reasons for extra marital affair can be many. You can read them in detail in the article Behind The Extra Marital Affairs. When many people still value the Indian traditions and lead a happy married life, many couple suffer like "two bullocks yoked together" (That Long Silence: Shashi Deshpande) in an Indian arranged marriage. The couple in the IT city with a western education, high paychecks, elite lifestyles and more self oriented goals may find the arranged marriages as an hindrance to their life's fulfillment. As they realise that adjustment and suffering in marriage is reserved for people who are not ready to take action, they may seek new realms of possibilities in life.
The same might have happened in many extra marital affairs. As in Rinku's case a silent partner could be the encouragement for her love affair with another guy. The high paychecks did not bring solace to their failing marriage life as she started to discover love and solace in another person. However the stormy mind, vengeance and jealousy of her husband brought out the ultimate doom.
Well, I am not here to discuss the details of the disastrous incident. What people in extra marital affairs and their partners can do is to keep a calm mind and faith in oneself before indulging in heinous act. If someone is serious about the extra marital affair that they cherish, be bold enough to walk out of the relationship that is unwanted for them. In that case you are not betraying the trust of another human soul. The separation may be painful but; it will be for the good of everyone.
At the same time once you suspect that your partner is having an extra marital affair, confront him/her and come to a clear conclusion. Also be aware that being tied the lawful wedding knot, you have no right to decide another human being's life. There might have mistakes from your part also that prompted him/her to walk away from the relationship that you are sharing. You must have faith in yourself and there is a wonderful life ahead to you. Move forward for it and you may find the true partner on the way.
Read about what Rinku Sachdeva's brother-in-law Ankush comments on the article:
"Dhanyasree, I loved your post. This is the first sensible/ mature comment I have seen compared to the crap that has been written out there. Kudos to your journalistic integrity. Rinkus Bro-In_Law."
