Flirting, Feelings, And Forever : Why Modern Dating Still Follows The Same Old Script
Once upon a time, meeting someone new meant eye contact across a crowded room. Now, it's more likely to begin with a swipe and a witty reply to an Instagram story. But while technology may have rewritten the script for how we meet, it turns out the story arc of love is still the same.
A recent study led by researcher Brian Ogolsky published in Personal Relationships in January 2025 suggests that the emotional roadmap of romantic relationships has remained strikingly consistent over the years. By comparing college students from 2012 and 2022, Ogolsky's team discovered that while the tools and timelines may have shifted, the heart still follows the same beats.
The Flirtationship : Love's Old Opening Act
Whether it started with a glancing look across campus or a perfectly timed emoji, the first stage of a romantic relationship is almost universally dubbed the "flirtationship." This is the phase where attraction flickers, conversations spark, and two people begin to wonder: "Could this be something?"
Both 2012 and 2022 participants described this early stage in remarkably similar terms-highlighting shared interests, playful banter, and the uncertainty that makes flirting feel equal parts exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Even with the rise of dating apps, the emotional experience of early attraction hasn't skipped a beat.
Testing The Waters : Are We A Match?
After the flirtation comes the deeper dive. Dubbed the "relationship potential" stage, this is when couples spend intentional time together-talking, texting, and quietly collecting data on each other's quirks, values, and habits.
Despite the ease of hopping from one date to the next in today's digital dating culture, this stage reveals a timeless desire: to find someone who truly fits. Students in both decades described this period as crucial for discovering emotional compatibility beyond the banter.
Exclusivity : The New-Old Milestone
Once the potential feels promising, couples step into the defining stage: becoming "official." This is where exclusivity is discussed (or at least strongly implied) and the relationship is no longer just a vibe-it's a commitment.
Even in an era where labels are often side-stepped and situationships abound, the majority of participants still saw this step as meaningful. Markers like saying "I love you," introducing a partner to friends or family, or simply deciding to delete dating apps were cited as significant milestones that signal seriousness.
Future Focus : What Comes Next?
The final chapter in the relationship journey is all about long-term decisions. Moving in together, getting engaged, or even choosing to part ways-this stage is where real life enters the equation, challenging couples to consider what the future holds.
Interestingly, both 2012 and 2022 students approached this phase with similar hopes and anxieties. While the path to this point may now include online courtship and emoji-laden conversations, the core challenge remains unchanged: deciding whether a relationship can grow beyond the glow of early romance.
Technology Changes, Feelings Don't
What Ogolsky's research makes clear is something both heartening and grounding: love, at its core, hasn't really changed. The technologies and timelines may shift, but the emotional architecture of relationships-the flirtation, the deepening bond, the commitment, and the future planning remains steadfast.
As we all live in an age that often seems obsessed with novelty, it's reassuring to know that some things like the way we fall for one another still follow an age-old rhythm. So whether you meet over lattes or likes, remember - 'the heart still knows the way'.
