Men Smell 'Cheesy', Women Stink 'Onion'
A bizarre study revealed that women smell of onions while men smell of Cheese. The study was conducted from sweat samples collected from the armpits of both the genders.
The research was conducted by scientists at Firmenich, a company in Geneva that researches flavors and smells for the food and perfume industry. The study involved samples of sweat taken from 24 men and 25 women after they spend 15 minutes at the sauna and on exercise bikes.
The New Scientist Magazine revealed that the women had high amounts of an odorless sulphur-containing compound, which when mixed with bacteria found under arms transformed the compounds in to 'Thiol'. This resulting compound smells like onions.
Samples collected from the men high levels of an odorless fatty acid, which when added to the enzymes released by the underarm bacteria gave out 'cheesy smell'.According to Christian Starkenmann, who lead the study, "Men smell of cheese, and women of grapefruit or onion".
The study further involved independent testers, who concluded that smell from women's armpits were more unpleasant. Professor Tim Jacob, who researches the science of smell at Cardiff University, said: "Other factors include what you eat, what you wash with, what you wear and what genes you inherit".AGENCIES
