Remembering Asha Bhosle Through Her Favourite Sol Kadhi Recipe, A Refreshing Summer Drink To Try At Home
Summer has a way of changing what ends up on the table. Heavy meals feel like work, and all you really want is something light, cooling, and familiar. In many Indian homes, that relief often comes in a simple glass of sol kadhi-pink, tangy, and effective. For Asha Bhosle, it was more than just a seasonal drink. It was something she felt strongly about.
Asha Bhosle's Life That Balanced Music And Food
Asha Bhosle's career stretched across eight decades, but her identity didn't stop at music. She was just as serious about food.
She cooked for her family between recordings, often returning home and heading straight into the kitchen to make full meals. Ashaji learned recipes from people she met while travelling, picking up techniques and flavours along the way.

At one point, she even turned that passion into a restaurant chain, bringing her understanding of Indian food to a global audience. She once summed it up simply-both singing and food had to be good.
That connection shows up clearly in something as simple as her sol kadhi, which she preferred to be made by her own hands. Because, as she put it in one of her interviews, no one else quite gets it right.
What Makes Her Sol Kadhi Different
Traditional sol kadhi from the Konkan region uses coconut milk and amsul (kokum) for its signature tang. Asha Bhosle's version stays rooted in that base, but carries a distinct home-style touch.
- Uses amsul (kokum water) for tang
- Adds garlic and hing for depth
- Keeps the flavours balanced, not overpowering
- It's still refreshing and cooling-but it feels personal. The kind that comes from repetition and instinct, not strict measurements.

This is based on what she shared during her interview with Curly Tales.

- Fresh or dry coconut
- Dry red chilli
- 1 clove garlic
- Fresh coriander leaves
- A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
- Salt to taste
- Amsul (kokum) water

Method
- Grind coconut, dry chilli, and garlic into a smooth paste
- Add water and mix well
- Strain to extract a light coconut milk base
- Add salt, hing, and chopped coriander
- Slowly mix in amsul (kokum) water for tang
- Adjust consistency and chill before serving
Why Sol Kadhi Is The Perfect Summer Drink
Even without the celebrity connection, sol kadhi has always made sense for Indian summers.
- It helps cool the body in humid weather
- Supports digestion after heavier meals
- Feels light, hydrating, and easy to have
Asha Bhosle's version keeps all of this intact-just with her own touch.
Summer food and drinks don't need to be complicated. The heat usually pushes things in the opposite direction-simpler, lighter, easier to return to.
Asha Bhosle's sol kadhi fits right into that rhythm. It's cooling, practical, and shaped by habit rather than rules. And that's what makes it work. When the weather feels draining, it's these familiar, well-balanced choices that hold up-a drink you trust, made the way you like it.
