India is a country of rituals and customs. It is the pious land where you can see unity in diversity. From ancient ages it has faced invaders and slowly accumulated their customs into it. Now, the country is rich with the traditional rituals of the Hindus, the Muslims, the Sikhs etc.

Indians have ceremonies for every occasion. If marriage can be celebrated with grandeur in every religion, how can they not welcome any new family member with grand celebration?

Therefore, there are many rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy. Every religion has their own style to greet the little member to their family. These rituals are coming down through generations from ancient time.

May be some of those are not even contemporary. Still, it is the age-old beliefs of people which lead them to perform these when the lady of their family get pregnant.

You must have seen or experienced certain programmes at your house. Some are celebrated in a huge manner; some may be a simple celebration. Not only religion, but the ceremonies differ from caste to caste.

Sasthi Puja

Sasthi is the Hindu Goddess of reproduction. This puja is mainly performed for the pregnant women at the east India. Mainly, Bengalis offer puja to her when they have a pregnant girl in their family. It is done to ask blessings from her for the would-be mother and her child.

Godh Bharai

The list of what are the rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy will remain incomplete without this. This is done at the seventh month of pregnancy. Here, the would-be mother is filled with gifts and blessings. This is also a Hindu ritual of pregnancy.

Shaad

Another completely Bengali programme arranged for pregnant woman. Both the maternal and in-laws families perform this for the pregnant girl. You may compare it with ‘Godh Bharai’ but it is little different in its presentation. Here, elders bless the girl and she is served with all the foods she likes.

Punsavana Amskara

This is one of the rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy. Basically, in previous era it was performed as a puja with demand of a male child. But today, such rituals should not have any values than just a ceremonial occasion.

Neyyu Kudikkan Konduvaral

What are the rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy? It is performed by the Malabar Muslims. On the 4th month, the girl is send to her father’s house to stay for 1 or 2 months. This time she has to keep ghee and several herbs at her diet.

Palla Kanan Pokk

This is very interesting ceremony of Malabar Muslims. After one month at natal house, the girl returns to her husband’s house. This time her in-laws and other relatives come to visit her with bakery goods. A relief to taste buds, isn’t it?

Pinchanam Ezhuthi Kudikkal

Among the rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy this is exclusively for Sunni Muslims. On the 5th and 6th month of pregnancy, the lady is given an Islamic medicine by the ‘Musliyar’. It is some verses from Quran written on a paper with special ink. The girl has to remove the ink in water and drink with raisins.

Indians are divided into several religions, caste and creeds. Therefore there are no endings of rituals performed for a Indian women during pregnancy. But the only rhythm that flows under all the rituals is the well-being of the would-be mother and her unborn child.
