Stomach Infection During Pregnancy: Care Tips
When a woman becomes pregnant, it is an occasion for great joy and celebration. Every physical and emotional change of a mother has its own impact on the baby in her womb. People often tend to give varied and confusing advice regarding the things that a pregnant woman must do and not do. But, there can be some unexpected health issues that can make your pregnancy period a difficult time.
One such common problem that occurs during pregnancy is stomach infection. This occurs mainly due to any kind of food poisoning or due to the decreased immunity. While pampering yourself mentally and emotionally, you have to care about your diet and daily exercises as well. Remember that the baby is completely dependent upon you for nutrition.
Treatments for any diseases, even your average common cold is tricky if you are pregnant. Ironically, this is the time when you are affected with various bothersome illnesses like stomach infection. Stomach infections during pregnancy can be particularly nasty since you are advised not to take any of the normal medicines. Taking self medication for stomach infections may affect the proper development of your unborn baby.

Symptoms: Stomach infections during pregnancy are accompanied by vomiting and diarrhoea. But these symptoms are often confused with morning sickness. But, if you have accompanying fever or cramps, then it is definitely an infection.
Maintain hygiene: When you have stomach infections during pregnancy, remember to maintain hygiene. Always keep your hands clean and avoid preparing food, so that the infection is not passed.
Dehydration: Stomach infections during pregnancy means vomiting, diarrhoea and other nasties which can lead to dehydration. Make sure to take lots of fluids, water or light juices. Oral rehydration fluids are also okay.
Sometimes, you are too weak when you get stomach infections during pregnancy. You may find it too difficult to sip fluids. So instead suck on ice or popsicles to remain hydrated.
Eat light: Infections during pregnancy will affect your appetite, but the little one inside you is going to be hungry. So, eat light foods till your stomach has settled, like some plain rice or oatmeal.
Ginger: Ginger is a wonder food for all infections during pregnancy, particularly stomach infections. So, take some ginger juice directly or mixed with tea to settle your rebellious tummy. You can also chew on some ginger candies.
Take rest: You might be tired of people telling you to take rest throughout your pregnancy. But when infections during pregnancy occur, your body needs as much rest as you can provide. So lie down with your body pillow and try to relax.
Gas relief: Most of the drugs are banned when you are pregnant, but you just got some infections during pregnancy. You should know that antacids are generally safe to take during pregnancy.
