Ways To Deal With Hypertension In Pregnancy
Pregnancy is supposed to be a blissful time for the mother and her family as they await the birth of their bundle of joy. So, it is ironic that so many complications are a part of this miraculous time, especially when any medications taken might be harmful to the foetus.
One of the major problems faced during pregnancy is hypertension or high blood pressure. This type of case can be included in this; one is when a woman diagnosed with high blood pressure become pregnant and the other is when a pregnant woman is diagnosed with hypertension. Either way the condition requires special care to be given to the woman for a safe pregnancy and delivery of a healthy child.
SPICES TO EAT AND AVOID IN PREGNANCY
There are three different types of hypertension in pregnancy; chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. While chronic and gestational hypertension goes away after some weeks, preeclampsia is a very serious condition, which may sometimes cause fatal consequences for both mother and the unborn child. Dealing with hypertension when pregnant is not an easy task, but it must be done to ensure the health and safety of both.
Below are some tips on how to deal with hypertension in pregnancy.
Be aware
In order to ensure proper dealing with hypertension when pregnant all pregnant women must be given proper antenatal education so that they can watch out for symptoms of hypertension and get early treatment.
Associated illnesses
Women who are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, diabetes and past history of hypertension are more likely to get hypertension in pregnancy. Even if they don't, increased vigilance is needed in these cases.
Existing hypertension
Dealing with hypertension when pregnant becomes more difficult if you already are a hypertension patient. You need to consult your doctor and change many of the prescription drugs as they might be harmful to the baby.
Constant vigilance
Constant vigilance is needed when dealing with hypertension when pregnant. You need to stay alert for preeclampsia symptoms like visual trouble, breathlessness, severe headache, vomiting and sudden swelling of the body.
Limit activities
Women who are prone to hypertension in pregnancy need to restrict their activities and take it slow so as to ensure that your blood pressure does not fluctuate frequently. Tiring exercises and sports are not to be done.
Bed rest
The best way to deal with hypertension in pregnancy, if it is not preeclampsia, is to take ample amount of bed rest. Do not exert yourself. Relax your body, which will help in returning blood pressure to normal.
Over excitation
Sudden excitement, either due to good news or bad news is to be avoided when dealing with hypertension in pregnancy. Sudden rush of adrenaline will cause a strain on your heart and shoot the blood pressure even higher.
Regular ultrasound
When you have been diagnosed with hypertension in pregnancy, it is part of the vigilance that you take regular ultrasound of the foetus to ensure that blood flow to the uterus is not blocked in any way.
Careful drug treatment
Hypertension in pregnancy makes taking drugs unavoidable. But, care must be taken so that you only take those drugs recommended by your doctor which will not harm the unborn baby.
