What pregnant women should eat in festivals?
- Don't eat much. Your meal should depend on your hunger. Eating more will not only add on to your weight but also reduce the growth of the baby.
- Have simple food during pregnancy which are not too oily or spicy. Also check the intake of salt and sugar. Eat less pickled food.
- Women tend to have high blood glucose so eat less sweets as far as possible in order to avoid gestational diabetes, common disease among pregnant women.
- See the fat content of the food. Pregnant women should avoid eating fried food.
- Have green vegetables salads or fruit salads. Pregnant women should avoid eating papaya, pineapple in the fruit salad.
- Green leafy vegetables are rich in folic acid, a must have in a pregnant woman's diet. Spinach, beetroot greens, fenugreek leaves and broccoli are healthy folic acid vegetables.
- Pregnant women during festivals can eat cereals and grains like ragi, wheat, oats, rice flakes.
- Avoid caffeine products. Also avoid having unpasteurised juices. You can have a glass of cold drink but if you have a fresh fruit juice as an alternative then better have juice!
- Low fat dairy products should be consumed every time. Even during festivals, pregnant women can make dishes with low fat milk.
Pregnant women should have meals at small intervals. Have ample of water whole day to stay hydrated.
