How to wean?

Breast-feeding is necessary for the first six months of your baby's life. However weaning can be a difficult time for both mother and baby. Some mothers and babies find the transition from breastfeeding to bottle-feeding difficult. If you are having difficulties, some of the following suggestions might be of help.
When to begin weaning that is, to stop breastfeeding depends upon each individual mother and the baby's need. Some babies wean themselves, while others continue to breastfeed for as long as their mother breastfeed them.
A very young infant will need to take the formula feed via a bottle . Until he becomes proficient at drinking from a cup, you will need to offer the formula both by a bottle and a cup.
If you wean your baby before 12 months of age, it is recommended you use an infant formula. After 12 months you may use cows' milk.
It is important to discuss your own individual weaning plan with your health professional to avoid unwanted problems. Eliminate only one breastfeeding to start, and substitute this for a formula feed. After that you can slowly progress to formula feed.
If your baby refuses to accept the transition when you are around, ask someone who is close to your baby to give the feed.
