Moisture Matters: Why Winter is the Season to Strengthen Your Kids’ Skin Barrier

Kids commonly have dry skin throughout the winter, especially when the weather gets colder. Their skin is naturally more sensitive than adults', which makes it react quickly to changes in temperature and humidity. Many parents notice their child's skin becoming dry, flaky, itchy, or rough, and in some cases, even cracked during the colder months.

For kids with dry skin, choosing the right moisturiser is crucial. Applying it right after a bath helps lock in moisture and protects the skin from harsh winter conditions. Understanding why skin dries out in winter is the first step toward keeping it healthy and comfortable.

We spoke to Prasanna Vasanadu, Parent Educator and Founder of Tikitoro, who explained why winter is the season to strengthen your kids' skin barrier.

Signs Your Child's Skin Barrier Needs Help

  • Dry, rough, or scaly patches
  • Redness or irritation, especially on cheeks and around the mouth
  • Itching that gets worse at night
  • Cracks on hands or feet
  • Frequent flare-ups of eczema or rashes

How to Improve Your Child's Wintertime Skin Barrier

Apply Moisturiser

"Apply the face cream and body lotion within three minutes of bath, while the skin is still slightly damp. This helps seal in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. During winter, choose a richer cream or lotion over light gels for longer-lasting hydration," said Vasanadu.

Select Kid- Friendly Products

Steer clear of body washes and soaps that include harsh chemicals, alcohol, or strong perfumes. These remove the natural oils from the skin. Seek out gentle, soap-free cleaners designed specifically for kids.

Avoid Taking Too Many Hot Showers

Baths should only last five to ten minutes. Long, hot baths may be reassuring, but over time, they erode the skin's protective layer.

Reapply Moisturiser

"One application is frequently insufficient in the winter. Before going to bed and after taking a bath, use moisturiser at least twice a day. Reapply during the day if necessary for extremely dry areas such as hands and cheeks," advised Vasanadu.

Don't Skip Sun Protection in Winter

Cold weather dries out exposed skin faster, especially the face and lips. Even in winter, UV rays are active, which is why daily sunscreen is still a must before stepping outdoors.

Bottomline

Vasanadu concluded, "Winter isn't only about keeping your child warm; it's also about keeping their skin well moisturised. Healthy, protected skin helps your child feel comfortable and happy during the cold months. With a little extra care and a simple skincare routine, your child's skin can stay soft, nourished, and healthy all winter long."
