The parental influence leads the child to pursue the careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or . The access to mathematics, which later leads to the pathway to such careers, begins at home.

So the strong encouragement given by the parents plays a vital role, for the child in pursuing a better career in the future.

This study is revealed by John Miller, the MSU Hannah Professor of Integrative Studies and his colleagues. According to him, the failure in building and maintaining the competitive scientific workforce may adversely affect the total standard of living of the upcoming generations.

The research also found that sons were slightly more encouraged than daughters to do well in science and math.
