Rising population is a growing problem in today's world. Specially, in countries like India and China. Though human welfare organisations are promoting various methods of contraception, we still face this issue. One way to curb this issue is to introduce people to permanent methods of contraception. Couples who have two or more kids can opt for this method of contraception.

Permanent contraception is available for both men and women. On the occasion of 'World Population Day' let us have a look at two methods of contraception that are applicable to both men and women.

Permanent contraception for women - Tubectomy

Tubectomy, which is also known as tubal ligation, is a surgical procedure to stop fertilization. In this method a woman's fallopian tube is blocked or sealed, so that the eggs do not reach the uterus for fertilization. Partial salpingectomy is one method of tubectomy that is widely followed. This is usually performed under the a local anesthsia. In most cases if a woman has undergone a caesarian birth and has decided not to give birth to any more children, can opt for this method of contraception. Since, is already under the influence of anesthesia, this surgery can be performed more easily.

A tubectomy is 99% effective. There are very few instances of pregnancy happening after a tubal litigation.

This surgery is done with the intention of providing permanent contraception. However, under cases when the woman wants to conceive again, she can opt for a tubal reversal, which is a microsurgical procedure to rejoin the fallopian tubes.

Permanent contraception for men – Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure to stop the sperms from entering into the seminal stream. In this procedure the vasa deferentia, are cut and then sealed. They are usually performed under local anesthesia. Keeping in mind the fact the men have to recover earlier, vasectomy is also done using the 'no-scalpel' techniques. After the procedure, the man can go back home after resting for sometime at the clinic. He can resume his normal work routine in about a week's time or even lesser time.

There are very less chances of this procedure failing. Vasovasostomy is a reversal procedure, which enables men to impregnate their partner. Considering the high cost of this surgery, it is not common in practice.

These are two main methods of contraception that are commonly adopted by both or either of the couples for permanent birth control.
