Year Ender: Popular English Wikipedia Articles Of 2023, Jawan, Pathaan, And IPL Dominate The List
The year 2023 is coming to a close and we all are gearing up to welcome the new year 2024. We all are constantly seeking information online about everything and consuming content like never before. Be it videos, reels, images or articles, they have kept us entertained throughout the year.
Well, recently, Wikipedia released its "Most Popular Articles of 2023" list on Tuesday, which was made by judging data from 01 January to 28 November 2023 and the results are quite interesting as seven out of 25 topics in the "top 25 most-popular English Wikipedia articles of 2023" were related to India.

The most-read article of the year was on OpenAI's virtual chatbot 'ChatGPT', followed by the topic 'Deaths in 2023'. Interestingly, the topic Cricket World Cup 2023 and the Indian Premier League secured third and fourth place in the list of "The top five articles of the year". Further, the Period drama 'Oppenheimer' stood at fifth spot.
"In 2023, cricket comprised a full 16% of English Wikipedia's top 25 articles" and the article on Cricket World Cup "received 304% more interest this year vs. its last edition", mentioned the Wikimedia Foundation's analysis.
Further, around the release dates of Shah Rukh Khan's back-to-back hits, Pathaan and Jawan, both films peaked at over one million views in a single day on English Wikipedia alone, said Wikimedia Foundation.
While speaking to CNN about India's presence in the 2023 list, Anusha Alikhan, chief communications officer at the Wikimedia Foundation said, 'Right now we have about 4,700 active English Wikipedia volunteer editors in India. That total puts them behind only the United States and the United Kingdom. India has a rich media environment and information technology sector.'
This list will be updated with the full year's data on 3 January 2024. Also, the free online encyclopedia revealed that in 2023, the English Wikipedia received over 84 billion views. Check out the list here.
