Gaurav Gogoi's Wife & Family Details: Separating Facts From Viral Speculation
Indian politics offers us the chance of learning about politicians through media headlines and intense political debates. However, behind every public figure is a personal story that many people are curious about. Gaurav Gogoi is one such name that has increasingly become part of popular Indian discourse, whether it is Congress sessions, political debates, or controversies. As the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he carries both a strong legacy and growing expectations of his own.
Early Life and Background
Born on 4 September 1982 in Delhi, Gaurav comes from a well-known political family. His father, Tarun Gogoi, was a hugely influential leader who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016, making him one of the state's longest-serving CMs. His mother is Dolly Gogoi, and he has a sister named Chandrima Gogoi. His uncle, Dip Gogoi, has also been a Member of Parliament.
Gaurav completed his schooling at St Columba's School in Delhi and went on to do a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He worked briefly in the corporate world before shifting to social work and later studying public administration in the United States, earning a master's degree from New York University.
Family: Wife, Kids and More
Wife: Elizabeth Colebourn
Gaurav married Elizabeth Colebourn (sometimes referred to as Colburn) in 2013. She is a British citizen and has worked as a senior consultant in international organisations.
Children: Kabir and Maya
The couple has two children: a son named Kabir (born in 2016) and a daughter named Maya (born in 2020).
Political Journey
Gaurav joined the Indian National Congress in 2013, following his stint in the social sector and NGOs. His first Lok Sabha win was for the Kaliabor constituency in 2014. The constituency had strong family links since his father had a long and illustrious political history. For two consecutive terms, Gaurav served the constituency well. In the year 2024, he contested and won the Jorhat constituency, which is another constituency where his father served.
In July 2024, he was named Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a role that shows the trust and importance he holds within the Congress party. A year later, in May 2025, he took charge as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, making him a key face of the party in the state ahead of the 2026 elections.
Career Highlights and Public Image
Gaurav is one of the more visible young leaders of the Congress; in Parliament, he often speaks out on national issues, which include debates on security and justice. His supporters see him as carrying forward his father's political and social legacy while infusing fresh energy into state and national politics.
Net Worth and Financials
As a politician, Gaurav is required to disclose his assets when filing nomination papers. In 2024, for the nomination of the parliament election, he declared assets valued at around ₹2.63 Crore. The assets include movable and immovable assets such as land and a flat in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
Other reports have estimated his broader asset profile in election affidavits to be part of a total portfolio worth approximately ₹4.9 crore when accounting for both movable and immovable assets, though figures can vary depending on disclosures and sources.
The Controversies Around Him
Gaurav Gogoi has been in the news not just for his politics, but also for the heated political battles with Assam's ruling party:
Accusations of Foreign Links
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made repeated allegations claiming Gaurav's family, including his wife, has links to Pakistan, including bank accounts and past overseas work ties that he says raise national-security concerns. These claims have been shared publicly by the CM and referred to investigative reports.
Gogoi and his supporters have rejected these allegations, calling them politically motivated and without solid evidence, and clarifying that his family members are Indian citizens and not connected to any hostile foreign entity.
Legal Back-and-Forth
The tensions between Gogoi and the Assam CM have even led to a ₹500 crore defamation lawsuit filed by the CM against Gogoi and other Congress leaders over public statements and accusations.
