As April unfolds, sky-watchers can look forward to the enchanting arrival of the Pink Moon-the first full moon of spring. This year's occurrence on 12 April 2025 is set to be particularly special, as it coincides with a micromoon, offering a more subtle, yet no less captivating, lunar display. Brimming with folklore, cultural resonance, and spiritual meaning, this moon promises far more than meets the eye.
What Is A Pink Moon?
Contrary to its romantic name, the Pink Moon does not actually appear pink in colour. The moniker hails from creeping phlox, a pink wildflower that blooms in early spring across eastern North America. The name reflects seasonal shifts rather than the moon's hue, in keeping with traditions stemming from Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore.
A Micromoon In The Night Sky
This year's Pink Moon is also a micromoon-a term used when the full moon occurs near its apogee, the point at which the moon is farthest from the Earth in its elliptical orbit. As a result, it will appear smaller and slightly dimmer than usual. Specifically, it will reach fullness at 8:22 p.m. BST on 12 April, nearly 22 hours before apogee, which occurs at 6:49 p.m. on 13 April. In contrast to the more familiar supermoon, this micromoon offers a quieter, more delicate beauty.
The Paschal Moon And Easter's Late Arrival
Beyond its visual charm, April's full moon holds deep religious significance. Known in Christianity as the Paschal Moon, it is used to determine the date of Easter Sunday. According to ecclesiastical tradition, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox (20 March). With the Pink Moon falling on 12 April, Easter 2025 will be celebrated on 13 April-a notably late date in the calendar.
Folklore And Alternative Moon Names
The Pink Moon is just one of many evocative names passed down through generations to reflect the seasonal environment. The Old Farmer's Almanac lists alternative names such as:
- Breaking Ice Moon
- Frog Moon
- Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs
- Moon When the Ducks Come Back
Each name captures a different facet of spring's awakening-from the thawing of frozen rivers to the croaking of frogs heralding warmer days.

The Pink Moon follows March's Blood Worm Moon, which in 2025 was particularly spectacular thanks to a total lunar eclipse-the first in nearly three years. February's Snow Moon, peaking on 12 February, marked the cold heart of winter.
