Shaheed Diwas, raises the temperature of patriotic Indians, and sets their pulse racing at the very mention of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev's sacrifice to the motherland. On 23 March 2023, they are honoured for their sacrifices that contributed to the Indian freedom.

The reason why they were hanged was that they had attacked the Central Legislative Assembly and killed JP Saunders who was a part of the British scheme to quell Indian rebellion. Let us go back in history and time and see how patriotism was the ruling theme in the minds of nationalist Indians of yesteryears.

Shaheed Diwas 2023: History

The voice of Lala Lajpat Rai which roared "Simon Go back" in a nonviolent satyagrah against Sir John Simons visit to Lahore in 1928 was successfully quelled and Simon ordered a lathi charge which had Lala Lajpat Rai succumb to death due to fatal injuries. Passing away of such a valorous patriot kindled a revengeful reaction in the young fighters whom Rai had inspired. The three youngsters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, who had fire in their spirits, decided to kill Simons. But Simon was lucky to escape this bid on his life, due to the trio's inability to spot him. Instead, they gunned down another officer ,Saunders who had nothing to do with the lathi charge. The trio was now chased by a constable, immediately after the incident. Chandrasekhar Azad was in support of them and he shot this police constable as a result of which the constable died and the three escaped being arrested.

But the grief stricken youngsters, disappointed that they had missed their target, made another ploy to attack the Central Legislative Assembly. They had also planned alongside, to stop the passing of Public safety bill and the Trade dispute act. Their adventure did not bear fruit as they were arrested on 1929 while trying to bomb the entire area but were immediately caught and sentenced to death. Actually their aim, as per their leaflet, was not to kill but a warning call to remind the British how callously they were exploiting us. . But later They were charged with a murder case for shouting the slogan "Inquillab Zindabad" and they were hanged in the Lahore Jail as a result. They were later cremated on the banks of the Sutlej river.

The youngsters who had put the country's hopes before theirs, died much before they could see life in all its colours. At an age where we settle comfortably into our first lucrative job soon after graduation, these heroes, at the age of 23, had died a heroic death. It was clearly the victory of selfless ideals over the selfish ideologies.
Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru belonged to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), a revolutionary organization that believed in the need of Himsa in realizing the dreams of national independence. Their martyrdom inspired several other likeminded youngsters of India to join the fray and fight for independence.

Shaheed Diwas 2023: Significance

This is the day when our heroes lead the Independence struggle to the next level and stopped their journeys at this stage. This blood boiling incident of their execution inspired many youngsters to contribute to the revolution in their own ways. The entire nation offered its condolences together for these bravehearts who gave up their life for the nation at the blink of an eye.

These valorous trio followed the path of Himsa and shunned Gandhiji's ahimsa. Their sacrifice was exemplary as they did something that was unthinkable for a person at that age. Let us pay homage to their sacrifices first and then to their yeoman contribution to the struggle of Indian independence.
