September 2026 Bank Holidays: Full State-Wise List Before You Plan Your Visit

A cheque that needs to clear before the weekend. A locker visit that keeps slipping to "next week." Then next week turns out to carry three separate holidays in a row. September is a genuinely crowded month on the Indian banking calendar this year - Janmashtami opens it on a Friday, Ganesh Chaturthi lands on a Monday, and a cluster of regional festivals fills out the back half, so a handful of states end up with more shut days than open ones in some weeks.

Bank branches in India close for national holidays, state-specific festivals, and the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, in addition to every Sunday. Digital services like UPI, IMPS, net banking and ATMs keep working through all of it, but anything that needs a physical branch, from cheque deposits to locker access, has to work around these dates.

Here is how the month breaks down, based on the Reserve Bank of India's holiday framework under the Negotiable Instruments Act:

• September 12 (Saturday) - second Saturday, closed nationwide; also Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva, additional closure in Guwahati
• September 13 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
• September 14 (Monday) - Ganesh Chaturthi, closed in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka
• September 15 (Tuesday) - Samvatsari and Nuakhai, observed in select cities in Gujarat and Odisha
• September 20 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
• September 21 (Monday) - Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi in Kerala; Ramdev Jayanti and Teja Dashmi in Rajasthan; Srimanta Sankardeva Janmotsav in Assam
• September 22 (Tuesday) - Karma Puja, closed in Ranchi
• September 23 (Wednesday) - birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji, closed in Jammu and Srinagar

Add these up, and banks in Kerala, Rajasthan and Assam could see closures on close to a dozen days this month, once weekends and regional festivals are factored in.

Why This Month Needs Extra Planning

Two stretches are worth marking early. The first runs from 13 to 15 September in Maharashtra, Goa and the other states observing Ganesh Chaturthi - a Sunday straight into a Monday holiday, meaning a full weekend without branch access for anyone in those states. The second is 20 to 22 September, where Kerala, Rajasthan and Assam each carry a Monday closure on top of the regular Sunday, effectively pausing branch banking for the first three days of that week.

Regional holidays add another layer. Ganesh Chaturthi closures apply only in select states, while Kerala alone carries two separate observances in the space of a week. The RBI does not issue a single uniform list for the whole country; it notifies holidays region by region, which is exactly why the same date can mean different things depending on where an account is held.

What Still Works When The Branch Is Closed

None of this affects digital banking. UPI transfers, IMPS, net banking, mobile apps and ATM withdrawals continue as normal through every date on this list. The closures apply strictly to in-branch services - cheque clearances, passbook updates, demand draft issuance, and anything that needs a signature across a counter. If a transaction genuinely needs a branch visit, that's the piece to plan around, not the digital half of banking.
