RB Choudary Passes Away at 79: Funeral Details, Last Rites and a Legacy That Outlasts Loss
He had been on his way to a wedding. Instead, the South Indian film industry found itself attending a funeral.
Veteran film producer RB Choudary, founder of Super Good Films, passed away on 5 May 2026 following a car accident in Udaipur, Rajasthan. According to reports, he was travelling to Jodhpur for a wedding ceremony when his vehicle met with an accident and overturned. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but passed away while undergoing treatment. He was 79.
The news sent shockwaves through the Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam film industries - all three of which RB Choudary had shaped, in his own quietly tenacious way, for nearly four decades.
Funeral and Last Rites: What We Know
His family has confirmed that his body will be brought to Chennai in a special flight on May 6. The last rites will be performed after his mortal remains are kept at his residence in Chennai, allowing fans and film personalities to pay their final respects.
Choudary is survived by his wife, Mahjabeen, and their four sons - Jiiva, who is active in Tamil cinema as an actor; Jithan Ramesh, who has also worked in films as an actor and producer; Suresh, who is associated with film production; and Jeevan, who is involved in business.
As of the time of publishing, the specific time and address for the final rites in Chennai had not been officially confirmed. Fans and well-wishers are advised to follow updates from the family and Super Good Films' official channels.
The Man Behind a Hundred Films
Over a career spanning decades, Choudary produced over 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi - a milestone that placed him among a rare handful of producers in Indian cinema to have reached that mark. Before venturing into film production, he worked in the steel, export, and jewellery industries. He began his career as a producer in the Malayalam film industry, producing several films under the 'Super' banner.
His banner, Super Good Films, produced award-winning films such as Nattamai, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Suryavamsam. He was also behind Cheran Pandian, Poove Unakkaga, Jilla, and Godfather, among others. His 98th production was Maareesan (2025), starring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu. The banner's 99th film, the upcoming Magudam, marks actor Vishal's directorial debut.
An Industry Stops to Mourn
The tributes came swiftly, and they came from the very top.
Rajinikanth shared an emotional tribute, describing Choudary as a "top-notch producer" and a "wonderful human being," noting that he gave opportunities to many young filmmakers and contributed greatly to keeping the film industry active and evolving.
Chiranjeevi said he was deeply saddened by the loss and highlighted Choudary's role in nurturing talent, mentioning their recent association through the film Godfather and calling his contribution to Indian cinema "beyond words."
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who worked with Choudary on Suswagatham, said the news was hard to believe and praised the producer's ability to choose meaningful stories that resonated with audiences.
Bottomline
RB Choudary did not make a hundred films by chasing trends. He made them by understanding, better than most, what audiences wanted to feel. His death - sudden, senseless, on a road in his home state - robs Indian cinema of one of its most enduring quiet forces. His last rites will be held in Chennai today, but the films he left behind will continue doing what he always intended: connecting people to stories that matter.
This is a developing story. Details regarding the exact time and address of the last rites in Chennai will be updated as confirmed by the family.
