Quick Commerce, Quirky Choices In 2025 : The Surprising Side Of India’s New Year Shopping Trends!
As the clock struck midnight on 31st December 2024, India wasn't just celebrating the arrival of 2025, it was revelling in a whole new way of partying. Quick commerce platforms like Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit, and BigBasket played fairy godmother, delivering everything from crisps and cola to grapes and, er, flavoured condoms too. If anything, the stats from these platforms proved that Indians know how to throw a celebration, and they weren't afraid to mix traditions with trends.
Party Like A Pro : Chips, Ice, And A Whole Lot Of Grapes
Albinder Dhindsa, co-founder of Blinkit, dropped some jaw-dropping stats on X (formerly Twitter). Blinkit alone delivered 2.3 lakh packets of aloo bhujia (because what's a party without bhujia?) and 6,834 packets of ice cubes, the MVPs of New Year's parties. And if you're wondering about the sudden grape frenzy, blame it on Gloria from Modern Family. Turns out, eating 12 grapes at midnight for good luck is now a thing in India too. Who says sitcoms don't influence culture?
Flavoured Condoms And Handcuffs : A Peek into India's Wild Side
India's New Year shopping lists were as varied as the celebrations themselves. Along with the usual party snacks, items like flavoured condoms saw notable demand, with chocolate (39%), strawberry (31%), and bubblegum (19%) being the most popular choices. Swiggy Instamart also observed some unconventional requests that included blindfolds and handcuffs. These trends highlight the diverse ways people rang in the New Year, catering to not just traditional but modern sensibilities as well.
Regional Rivalries: Chennai's Chill vs Mumbai's Madness
While cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad stocked up like pros, Chennai played it cool with more modest celebrations. Swiggy Instamart noted a record 853 chips orders per minute at its peak, and 119 kg of ice delivered in a single minute. Clearly, Mumbai and Co. weren't messing around when it came to prepping for their parties.
A Pandemic-Fuelled Revolution : From Metro To Tier-2 Towns
The pandemic may have brought us masks and social distancing, but it also gave a turbo boost to quick commerce. From metro cities to tier-2 and tier-3 towns, platforms like BigBasket saw a 552% jump in non-alcoholic beverages and a 200% surge in sodas and mocktails. Whether it's stocking up on essentials or last-minute party prep, these platforms have now proved to be as essential as the celebration itself.
India's 2025 New Year celebrations showcased a unique blend of tradition and modernity, powered by the efficiency of quick commerce platforms. From time-honoured rituals like the grape-eating tradition to meeting diverse and contemporary party needs, these platforms proved to be the backbone of the festivities.
As the nation continues to embrace convenience-driven innovations, it's clear that the way we celebrate is evolving, bringing people closer to their traditions, while also catering to the vibrant and eclectic spirit of modern India.
