Cow Lovers May Celebrate 'Cow Hug Day' On 14 February, Which Is Marked As Valentine's Day

Valentine's Week has started and while it is difficult for you to keep a track of days, be it -chocolate day, hug day, promise day, kiss day, propose day, etc. While some already dread the idea of showing love, giving gifts or doing things due to the cultural or social pressure in a relationship to fulfil the unrealistic idea of love on 14 February, which is Valentine's Day, the last thing they will like to think about is cows!

We are not joking! It is serious!

On 06 February, Monday, at the behest of the government, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws issued an appeal to the cow lovers of this country to celebrate 'Cow Hug Day' on 14 February by hugging cows.

Here is what the notice by the board read, 'We all know that the cow is the backbone of Indian culture and rural economy, sustains our life, and represents cattle wealth and biodiversity. It is known as 'Kamdhenu' and 'Gaumata' because of its nourishing nature, like mother, the giver of all, providing riches to humanity.'

It also mentioned that due to Western cultural influence over time, the Vedic traditions are almost on the verge of extinction and that hugging the cow will bring emotional richness and will increase our individual and collective happiness. Therefore, AWBI urged to hug cows keeping in mind the importance of mother cows and making life happy and full of positive energy.

SK Dutta, AWBI secretary has signed the appeal and mentioned that it was issued with the 'approval of competent authority and "on the direction of the department of animal husbandry and dairying, ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying'.

The Animal Welfare Board of India is the first of its kind to be established by any Government in the world, was set up in 1962, in accordance with Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Acts 1960 (No.59 of 1960) and it provides grants to Animal Welfare Organizations and advising the Government of India on animal welfare issues, the Board has been the face of the animal welfare movement in the country for the last 50 years.
