International Day of Peace ...Part I Contd
Celebrating The Day of Peace
There are various appreciable ways to celebrate the day of peace. One can celebrate this day in whatever way he is inspired as a peacemaker.
It is a common practice throughout the world to observe one minute of silence. Local events are organized in schools, places of worship, libraries, parks, municipal buildings etc... Prayer meetings for world peace or night vigils are organized in various places. On this day people participate in processions with a candle lit for world peace.
Other practices include flag hoisting, planting trees, cultural events, sending greeting cards, wearing a peace bracelet etc.. Some people even have a peace day party or a peace day parade. Participate in a Pinwheels for Peace celebration, fasting on this day, participating in a community service programme etc.. may make the peace day celebration meaningful.
World peace in the fullest sense is unachievable in today's life situations, striving for it is a worthy goal from both personal and social aspects. It is generally compared as the striving for perfection despite it being unattainable. The most suitable progress toward world peace is a step-by-step improvement of current processes. Even though attaining world peace at a single stretch is not possible, doing one more peaceful thing today than one has previously done is a truly attainable goal. A day for international peace is always beneficial as people can take a a long look at history and learning the triggers of armed conflict. Learning from the blood shed and violent conflicts, it is the duty of each one to contribute to world peace thus making a conflict free world.
It is true to say that peace does not rest in the charters and covenants alone. It lies in the hearts and minds of all people. So let us strive to build peace, a desire for peace, a willingness to work for peace in the hearts and minds of all of our people. The problems of human destiny are not beyond the reach of human beings.
Along with all those souls who sacrificed their lives to establish world peace, together with the peace striving minds let us pledge to work for a peace blossomed world.
