Modi In Ghana: Cultural Diplomacy Takes Centre Stage With MPs Wearing Indian Attire
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Ghana struck a balanced note - respectful, culturally aware, and focused on long-term cooperation. From thoughtful gestures inside Parliament to meaningful conversations around development, the visit showed how relationships between countries are shaped not just by policy, but by everyday expressions of respect.
A Cultural Gesture That Stood Out
During PM Modi's address to Ghana's Parliament, two Ghanaian MPs arrived in Indian outfits - one in a pagdi and Bandhgala, the other in a traditional Indian ensemble. The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, acknowledged them during the session, thanking them for celebrating Indian culture in such a visible way.
This wasn't part of any formal protocol. It was a small act, but it reflected something deeper - a comfort with cultural exchange that felt genuine.
Development On Equal Terms
Modi spoke clearly about India's partnership with Africa. It's not about one side giving and the other receiving. "Our development partnership with Africa is demand-driven," he said, highlighting India's approach of responding to what African countries prioritise for themselves.
He voiced strong support for Africa's Agenda 2063 - a roadmap shaped within the continent. India's role, he said, is to contribute to systems that can support themselves - whether through skills training, health infrastructure, or local industry.
Respect For Ghana's Democratic Role
Ghana's political stability and democratic process have been recognised internationally, and PM Modi made sure to highlight this during his speech. He described Ghana as strong and principled, noting the role it plays across West Africa and beyond. He also conveyed greetings from 1.4 billion Indians, reinforcing the connection between the people of both nations.
A National Honour And New Conversations
Earlier that day, Modi was conferred Ghana's national honour - Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana by President John Dramani Mahama. It recognised his role in building stronger cooperation between India and Ghana.
The leaders also announced plans to move towards a Comprehensive Partnership, which will involve broader engagement across trade, education, healthcare, digital infrastructure, and more.
A Visit That Moves The Relationship Forward
This visit was steady and focused. Just a clear effort to build on existing ties while making room for new possibilities. With cultural appreciation on one side and policy alignment on the other, India and Ghana are shaping a relationship that's practical, respectful, and future-ready.
