Volcano House: History Blends Hospitality

Exclusively located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and nestled in an Ohia forest, historic Volcano House is constructed on the edge of Kilauea Crater, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. For generations, the volcanic activity, beautiful native forests and fresh mountain air of the volcano region have drawn residents and visitors from across the globe.
As Volcano House is the best location from which to access the many wonders of this area whether it be hiking across a steaming crater, viewing flowing lava or lying on a black sand beach, since 1846 Volcano House has been 'the place' to stay.
This old style country lodge, the state of Hawaii's oldest continuously operated hotel and the only hotel in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is proud of its tradition of providing hospitality services with genuine Aloha. For over 125 years the lobby fireplace, symbolic of the warmth and Aloha that is Volcano House, has burned bright, warming visitors as they reflected on the day's adventure.
The history of Volcano House can be traced back to 1824 when Chiefess Kapiolani and her entourage built a grass shack on the crater rim. Throughout history, Ancient Hawaiians came to Kilauea crater to worship the Volcano goddess Pele with offering and prayers. In an ironic twist, the first structure was built not to worship but rather to denounce Pele.
Volcano House is currently comprised of the Main Building, the Deluxe Wing, the Ohia Wing, a minute's walk from the main lobby, and the Namakani Paio Cabins, 3 miles from the main building. The main building of the present Volcano House was built in 1941, with the addition of the Deluxe Wing built in 1962. There are 6 Crater View Deluxe, 14 crater-view rooms, 12 non- crater view rooms, 8 garden view rooms, 2 standard Ohia rooms and 10 cabins available for visitors.
