Nehru Children's Museum - Kolkata
Nehru Children's Museum lies in the midst of hustle and bustle of Chowringhee Road. It was built in 1972 as a tribute to India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The primary objective of the museum was to impart education to children through informal means and make the mode of learning more visual for the children. It also aims at spreading awareness to help people combat superstition and social evils.
The museum, which is spread over 4 floors, is a world of treasure for children. It helps children to travel to the world of epics, the world of science and to the world of imagination. According to the statistics, till the mid 2001, more than 90 million adults and 1 million under-privileged children have stepped inside this treasure world.
Below are some of the the most fascinating galleries for the children.
Dolls and Science Gallery : Varied dolls from 88 countries have been exhibited in the dolls gallery. Recently dolls from Thailand have also been added to the group. Kids can also see dolls wearing national costumes from different countries. One can experience miniature working models of railway crossings and other novelties and an elementary science gallery too.
Toys : Toys of oriental and western origins are equally attractive.
children Ramayana and Mahabharata: The two great epics are narrated through miniature models and scenery arranged sequentially. It helps the kids to have a total glimpse of the epic in this gallery
Special Highlights : The museum also offers library services, guide services, lectures and film shows. Kids can also see small working models of railway crossings.
Jawahar Sishu Bhabhan is working for children since its inception in 1972, within the premises of Nehru Children's Museum. It is functioning as an Aptitude Center in the fields of painting, dance and recitation. The 3-year Diploma Course imparts training in painting, creative dance and recitation. The courses are quite popular and have on their roll about thousand students. Kids can also take part in vocational training center. Courses include creative painting, stage play, Bharat Natyam, music appreciation course, portrait painting and many more
