Nearly ten years after she was tied up at gunpoint in a Paris hotel room, Kim Kardashian has received the final word from the French justice system on her jewel heist case - a symbolic 1 euro in civil damages, the exact figure her legal team had requested.

The ruling was reported this week by multiple outlets, including Reuters and regional wire services, closing out a case that has drawn global attention since the October 2016 robbery during Paris Fashion Week. According to Reuters, Kardashian herself testified at trial that she believed she might not survive the ordeal, as two armed men disguised as police officers, wearing ski masks, broke into her suite, restrained her, and fled with jewellery that reportedly included a $4 million engagement ring given to her by her then-husband, the rapper now known as Ye.

A Token Sum With a Deliberate Purpose

Civil damages cases in France sometimes involve plaintiffs seeking only a nominal 1-euro payout rather than a market-value settlement-a legal move typically made to secure formal acknowledgement of harm rather than financial restitution. That appears to be exactly what happened here: Kardashian and her stylist, Simone Harouche, who was also present during the robbery, each requested and received just 1 euro.

Other plaintiffs in the case fared very differently. Court records cited by multiple outlets show:

• Kim Kardashian - awarded 1 euro (about $1.15), the amount requested
• Simone Harouche, Kardashian's stylist - also awarded 1 euro
• Hôtel de Pourtalès, where Kardashian was staying - awarded roughly 50,000 euros
• A former hotel receptionist, who said the heist left him traumatized - awarded around 109,500-110,000 euros, after seeking 550,000 euros in damages
• Reuters additionally noted that the robbery was, at the time, considered France's largest jewellery theft in two decades, and that most of the stolen items - including the engagement ring - were never recovered.

The Case Behind the "Grandpa Robbers"

The scale of the original crime made global headlines. It was reported back in 2021 that a dozen suspects were ultimately ordered to stand trial following a five-year investigation into the roughly $10 million heist, after Kardashian described being locked in a bathroom during the break-in.

That trial finally took place in 2025. Public broadcaster The 10 defendants who stood trial that May, 8 were found guilty and 2 were acquitted. Because several of the convicted men were in their 60s and 70s, French media nicknamed the group "les papys braqueurs" - the "grandpa robbers." Despite convictions on charges including armed robbery, kidnapping, and criminal gang association, none of the men returned to prison, as time already spent in pretrial detention was deemed to cover their sentences, and none appealed.

Kardashian and Harouche's Response

Following this week's civil ruling, Kardashian and Harouche issued a joint statement noting that the trauma of the experience has lingered, and framing the outcome as a matter of accountability and recognition rather than compensation. The pair thanked the court and those who supported them through the process, and said they hoped to move forward.

This echoes sentiments Kardashian expressed after last year's criminal conviction, when she said the ordeal had left a lasting impact on her and her family, while voicing gratitude toward French authorities for pursuing the case.

A Decade-Long Legal Chapter Closes

From the initial break-in during Fashion Week in 2016, through a years-long investigation, a dozen suspects referred to trial, a headline-grabbing 2025 verdict, and now this week's civil damages ruling, the case has spanned nearly a decade. With no appeals filed and the civil compensation now determined, the legal chapter of one of the most closely watched celebrity crime cases in recent memory appears to be complete.
