International Labour Day 2024: History

One of the key events that led to the establishment of Labour Day was the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886, where a peaceful labor protest turned violent, resulting in the deaths of several workers and police officers. In response to this tragedy, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st as International Labour Day to commemorate the struggle for workers' rights.
Though the immediate impact on labor conditions was minimal, the establishment of the eight-hour workday marked a significant shift. By 1891, the International's second congress cemented May Day as an annual celebration. India's first observance came in 1909, thanks to Comrade Malayapuram Singaravelu Chettiar's efforts, marking it with the inaugural use of a red flag to symbolize the occasion.
