Depressing Or Delicious? A Gen Z Food Trend Has Gone Viral For All the Wrong Reasons
Social media has a way of turning the simplest things into massive trends. One day it's a quirky dance move, the next it's a bizarre beauty tip, and before you know it, everyone's trying something new just to keep up. But not every trend hits the right note; some leave people more confused than impressed. Right now, there's a viral craze taking over that has everyone divided. It's unusual, it's quirky, and it's got people asking, "Why are we even doing this?"
When Gen Z's Trends Are Too Weird To Digest
Lately, it feels like TikTok is a factory for bizarre trends, churning out everything from peculiar coffee hacks to questionable dating trends like "throning." Just when you think you've seen it all, Gen Z has cooked up another quirky craze and this time, it's yoghurt, in the spotlight. And it's not just any yoghurt but dry yoghurt. As the festive season creeps closer and Christmas is just around the corner, this unusual obsession has people scratching their heads. While it's certainly catching attention online, many aren't exactly thrilled by how "bleak" and unappetizing it looks. What's the deal with dry yoghurt being a trending topic, anyway?
The Dry Yoghurt Trend
According to The Takeout, this trend takes a page from labneh, the creamy Middle Eastern yoghurt spread made by straining yoghurt to remove excess liquid. To try it for yourself, the process is surprisingly simple: wrap some yoghurt in a paper towel, place a heavy object on top to press out the moisture, and let it sit in the fridge for a full 48 hours. After the wait, the yoghurt transforms into a clay-like texture, barely resembling its original form. TikToker Michelle Brown jumped on the bandwagon, documenting her attempt in a mini-series that has racked up over 21 million views-and sparked plenty of mixed reactions.
Michelle Brown's Perspective
After giving it a go, Michelle Brown shared her thoughts on the unusual creation: "Woah, that is thick, I don't know if I like the thickness," she admitted, noting how it clung to every part of her mouth. She added, "The taste hasn't really changed that much. I think it would be really good with some fruit and granola on it. It's just like eating thick... almost like frosting. Thick, thick frosting."
Social Media's Perspective
While a few people seem to enjoy experimenting with this peculiar trend, many on social media are left wondering why anyone felt the need to tamper with yoghurt in the first place.
"Who decided that we're making yoghurt dry now? Why are you doing that," one Twitter user questioned. Another chimed in, "Everyone's making 'dry yoghurt' on TikTok and it's just labneh lol." A third shared their frustration: "I somehow ended up on a dry yoghurt bowl TikTok and I went out."
Meanwhile, someone else summed up their experience with, "I made dry yoghurt but it's soggy and depressing."
While yoghurt might be the centre of attention this week, you can bet something equally strange will take its place soon enough. So with all the weird food, dining and dating trends coming our way are you ready for the next one?
