Bridging Generations: The Heartwarming Bond Between Ratan Tata And His Millennial Friend

Friendship is a beautiful bond, no doubt. It's always great to know there are a group of people out there who will be there with you through thick and thin. In life everyone must be having a group other than their family with whom they can share their joy, tensions, laughter and tears. Sometimes families can't understand or relate to us as much as these friends do.

Talking about friendships, let's shed light on a unique and special friendship shared between two people that is pretty relevant today. As the world is grieving over the demise of the iconic business legend Ratan Tata, what's trending on social media is the friendship he shared with his millennial friend cum close associate, Shantanu Naidu, founder of senior citizens companionship start-up 'Goodfellows', a company founded by Ratan Tata.

On LinkedIn the 31-year-old had shared the comment "The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse," he wrote with a picture of the two seated on a flight. Shantanu, dressed in white also escorted Ratan Tata's hearse on a bike as the industrialist's body was transported to Mumbai's NCPA for public viewing.

Their Story of Friendship

Shantanu Naidu and Ratan Tata shared one thing in common, that was immense love for animals. Naidu started an initiative (which he later founded as 'Motopaws' in 2015) that provides stray dogs with reflective collars, aiming to make them more visible to motorists at night and reduce the risk of accidents. Slowly his work began to gain recognition and he got featured in the Tata group newsletter.
In 2014, Shantanu, who was a fifth generation Tata employee, sought help from Ratan Tata for this initiative. Little did he expect Tata to write back to him two months later on. He invited him to Mumbai to become his assistant.

Naidu left for the United States to pursue his MBA at Cornell University, following the footsteps of his mentor. Before leaving, he made a heartfelt promise to return to India and contribute to the Tata Trust. Staying true to his word, after earning his degree, he returned to India and accepted an offer to work as Tata's assistant

Since then, Naidu had become a familiar presence at Tata's side, often accompanying him during his rare public appearances. Over the years, they have showcased a growing bond reflecting a deep mutual respect and dedication to a shared vision for India's future. As he continued to develop his initiatives, he also launched 'Good Fellows,' a startup focused on providing companionship to senior citizens.

"My connection with Mr. Tata has given me a deep understanding of the value of intergenerational relationships," explained the 31-year-old. The startup secured an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Mr. Tata. A Cornell University graduate, Naidu has been working with Tata since 2018, starting with his role in the Office of RNT, which is the private office of the industrialist, after his tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons.

Shantanu even authored a memoir titled 'I Came Upon a Lighthouse', reflecting on his relationship and special bond with Ratan Tata.
