About Festivals And Religious Events In August 2024
- Raksha Bandhan: This day is also known as Rakhi, is a significant festival in Indian culture, celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country and by Indian communities worldwide. The festival emphasizes the bond between brothers and sisters, symbolizing love, protection, and mutual respect. Sisters prepare by buying or making rakhis, which are often colorful threads, sometimes adorned with beads, sequins, or religious symbols. Gifts for brothers are also prepared, which can range from sweets to more personalized items.
- Independence Day: It is celebrated annually on August 15th in India, marks the country's liberation from British colonial rule in 1947. The national flag is unfurled on this day and patriotic programs are organised to commemorate the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the freedom of this nation. Also, the Prime Minister addresses the nation gives an account of the achievements in the previous year as well as offers a glimpse of the future plans.
- Parsi New Year: This day is also known as Navroz (or Nowruz), is the celebration of the Iranian New Year by the Parsi community in India. It is a significant cultural and religious festival for Zoroastrians and marks the beginning of the new year according to the Fasli calendar. Navroz has its origins in Zoroastrianism, one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions, founded by the prophet Zoroaster in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) over 3,000 years ago. Fire temples are visited to seek forgiveness for their sins and pray for prosperity.
- Janmashtami: Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. Observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada (usually August or September). Devotees engage in singing bhajans (devotional songs), chanting Krishna's name, and reading scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavata Purana. Also, Dahi Handi is celebrated on this day.
