“67” Is Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year: The Viral Trend With No Meaning That Took Over the Internet
In a year of fast-moving slang and internet buzz, Dictionary.com has chosen an unusual champion for its 2025 Word of the Year: "67," pronounced "six-seven." Rather than a political term or a technical phrase, this year's pick is a viral meme-driven piece of generational slang that captured global attention, even though most people still aren't sure what it actually means.
From TikTok Meme to Word of the Year
On October 29, 2025, Dictionary.com officially named 67 as its Word of the Year after analysing language patterns, search behaviour, social media buzz, and cultural conversation over the past year.
In contrast to more conventional slang terms that correspond to important events or universally accepted concepts, "67" is exceptional in its intentional lack of clarity. The number has seen a tremendous increase in searches; this was particularly the case over the summer months of 2025.
Where It Started and Why It Spread
The trend is believed to have roots in rapper Skrilla's 2024 song Doot Doot (6 7), which repeatedly features the phrase in its hook, helping it gain traction on social platforms. Videos that paired the lyric with clips of athletes, especially NBA player LaMelo Ball, who is 6-foot-7, pushed it even further into the cultural stream.
This is how "67" became an exuberant shout and a youth social language, involving a hand gesture with palms moving up and down to the rhythm of an imaginary song.
Meaning? There Isn't One - And That's the Point
What is perhaps most interesting about the six-seven phenomenon is its refusal to commit to a particular definition. According to Dictionary.com, the word is simply "meaningless, ubiquitous, and nonsensical," and its definition is representative of the kind of 'brainrot slang' which exudes from the internet in ways that rely on usage rather than sense.
While some people interpret it as meaning so-so or maybe this, maybe that, others use it simply to be funny, ironic, or performative, a piece of linguistic play that signals belonging to a peer group rather than conveying information.
Why "67" Matters
You might wonder why a number with no obvious definition would win Word of the Year. But language isn't just about clarity, it's about connection. In a world where communication increasingly happens through short clips, memes, and inside jokes, "67" reflects how young generations are shaping language:
- It's generational: Used widely by Gen Alpha and Gen Z in schools, online communities, and pop culture.
- It's viral: The term didn't need a dictionary meaning to spread, it spread because people used it, shared it, and made it part of everyday digital interaction.
- It's playful: In a year marked by serious global conversations, "67" brought levity, a reminder that language also evolves through humour and shared absurdity.
A Trend Reflecting Internet Culture
It has been observed that "67" especially reflects the way in which language is developing in this new age of technology: not only meaning but also identity, humour, and community can propel language use. In contrast to other Word of the Year selections that often mirror global events or societal issues, "67" represents a side of language driven by play, performance, and generational identity.
As Dictionary.com has pointed out in its own definition, its defining characteristic is that it resists definition, making Dictionary.com a perfect symbol of a language culture driven by virality, creativity, and collaboration.
